Barrett M82A1 .50BMG semi auto with a 10 rounder mag...

5 miles? Hah. i'd say no more than 2. total distance is perhaps 5 miles, but effective distance is probably no more than ~2.

Don't mind the folks teasing you, it's meant to be good natured.

Plenty of folks here got interested in guns due to games and movies, nothing wrong with that.

The Barret M82A1 with optics and practice ammo is going to run you somewhere in $9,000 range, and is not exactly easy to learn on. It's kind of like seeing someone drive the Indy 500 and saying "I want a car like he's got". It's cool but not really a beginner gun.

If you're curious about it, just run a Google seach on "Barret M82A1", or run a search here on this forum, as we have at least a few folks here who own one and have written reports on them.

If you're interested in getting started in shooting, with an eye to someday doing long-range shooting, your best bet is to get a .22 caliber rifle and start practicing. A .22 will range out to about 100m or so (though you'll want to start much closer in), and is an absolutely outstanding way to build up your skills. Very little recoil, ammo is 2c per shot, decent American-made rifles start around $100 new.

If you're interested in getting started shooting, we have several threads in the Rifle forum right now from folks getting advice on getting started. Let folks know what part of the country you live in, and maybe someone can direct you to a good place to get basic rifle training.

Good luck in tracking down info on the Barret (which shouldn't be hard), and good luck in getting started shooting. Take care,

1. "Not getting caught" has a lot more to do with fieldcraft, practice, and tactics than it does the weapon. Although, if you actualy studied ballistics, range estimation, wind doping etc. and practiced enough that you could hit a target at those ranges with a .50 BMG rifle, I will admit you're probably halfway there.

(First hint, you'll need several thousand dollars above and beyond the $7000 for the Barrett for a scope that's of sufficient quality to withstand .50 BMG recoil, and have enough windage and elevation adjustment range to do any work at 1 mile + ranges. The match grade .50 ammo is also several dollars per round.)

2. I'm not a mod, but talking about "killing someone", especialy without appropriate context, is just a little :uhoh: around here. It's why they call it "The High Road" after all.

I do hope you stick around and learn all you can about responsible shooting, it's a great board. :)

Shooting something at a range of 5 miles would probably require at least a 105 howitzer. Now, if you want to push 2 miles (Carlos Hathcock's longest shot was something like 1700 yards with a .50 M2), I would also suggest an Accuracy International .338 Lapua with a Schmidt & Bender 10x scope. Will set you back about $10,000, but it will do the trick at that range. A LOT of agencies and military groups are adopting the .338 Lapua as a deadly accurate round at extreem range. The AI is the best platform. I think that I saw an ad for a new Barret .338 Lapua sniper set up being touted.

Is Accuracy International still around?
They were having some big problems, and there was a lot of talk about them going under.

They filed for protection in England, which has a different meaning than it does here. They stopped production for about a month, but they are back in full production, and there is usually a 4 to 6 month waiting list for all calibres. That is the toughest rifle I have ever seen. Saw one intentionally dropped from a 40' tower. The rifle was dusted off and fired 5 rounds in a fuzzy hole (about 1/2" group) at 200 yards, dead on point of aim with the Schmidt and Bender scope. I am totally impressed!

A 105MM Howitzer would be hard pressed to throw a shell out to five miles!
2 miles would be seriously pushing it for a .50 caliber Browning cartridge, I don't care what platform it is fired in.

thanks for the site link FatalMove i know you where putting it there for everone but someone has to thank you.

Mr. Black, we do not discuss sniping here except in the context of target shooting, and military or LEO operations. The purpose of THR is to promote responsible firearms ownership.

As for a .50, there is a difference between the distance the round will travel and the distance you can effectively hit a target. Even some of the longer ranges mentioned generally require a bit of luck as the .50 is not the greatest accuracy wise.
