I am looking to buy a new Revolver in the near future...but I don't know what to get (I want them all)....It will be a Carry/Desk/Car/target gun....I know that I want at least a 3inch barrel...I have ruled out everything but S&W and Ruger....I am leaning toward a SW386/686...but then there is the 329/629 loaded with 44spl would be nice...but I like the 7 round cyclinder of the 386/686 Plus...I have never owned a Ruger revolver so I would like to hear about some of them.

Help

What about a S&W 686 plus thats also a seven shot or a Ruger Gp100 they are 6 shots, but they are also a fine and durable revolver and fairly priced.Unless you are concerned with weight ??

Weight is not a real concern with this weapon...IMHO weapons are getting way too light now days and to me this takes away accuracy and follow up shots.

We were just kind of curious, since you mentioned the Scandium AirLite 386 and 329 instead of the stainless 686 and 629...

My bad I posted that when I was in a bit of a rush and did not proof read it...I went back and edited it....Sorry for the mistake.

I have considered a Ruger too. I'm in the same boat as you are right now having just posted about some revolver recommendations. You can check it out further down. I have the S&W 442 which is a snub nose, double action gun. I hate it really because the recoil hurts like Hell so I replaced the grip with a Hougue grip -- still not my favorite gun. I'm a female shooter and recoil shy. After all the great recommendations, I think I'll be going with the 686 -- it's small enough, comes in different brrll lengths, single/double action, not too small though that it'd hurt to fire, can use .38 ammo to reduce recoil even further -- FANTASTIC grip and I imagine more accurate than my 442. I think the 686 and 686P come in 6 and 7 rounds. I'd look seriously into it. You can always get a Ruger later but the 686 will eventually be a carry gun of mine.:D

If you want to take up reloading (or even thought about it), the GP-100 is a very good platform for experimentation. I use my 4" GP-100 for carry, IDPA, target...everything.

As far as trigger pull, the GP-100 out of the box will probably not be as good as a S&W. That being said, the trigger cleans up with use and personally I prefer the GP-100 trigger now that I'm used to it.

Sounds like you need to try out some guns.. ;-)

I have two 686+'s and a 386 TiScan

I am very high on the 7-shot format. I have several hundred rounds through each of the 686+ revos with no problem. One 686+ is a snubby while the other has a 4" barrel. Give the general nature of use that you outlined in your post I think that the 4" barrel model is probably your best choice. The 386 is probably a gun that is meant to be carried a lot and shot a little. The recoil is substantial although not as terrible as some would lead you to believe. Defnitely not the gun you would like to use for a long afternoon at the range. However, for concealed carry it simply cannot be beat.

Rugers are also fine guns. They are of exceptionally strong construction and, should you handload, will take very "hot" loads although such loads should be used with extreme care. If you gun is to be subjected to any abuse such as banging around in a gun case then Ruger is an excellent choice. Good Shooting;)
