Just got back from another gun show. My cousin found a Yugo M48 that he wants and it looks great. But I have a few questions. First off the stock is great, the bluing is great near 96%. The gun over all looks excellent. The gun comes with a bayonet, sling, ammo pouch, and cleaning kit. The bore is shiney and rifling is great. The man tells us the gun is unissused and I do believe him. But the real question I have is that the reciever has no crest. The guy tells us there is no crest because the guns were made for a different country so the Yugo's never put on the crest. He also says there were only like 5000 of these made with no crest. And the final thing is that the guy wants $179 for it. If he would be offering $110 or even $140 I would most likely tell my cousin to buy it. But is this unissused yugo with no crest worth $180? I just don't know. I need help.

Can't help you on the value of a rifle with or without a crest but if you check out the Shotgun News and some of the milsurp vendors that have sites on the net you will see there are lots of 48s on the market.
Some are claimed to be unissued at about that price. Used ones about half that price. Don't believe they mention having a crest or not but at that price I would want all the numbers to match and not be electro-penned. Check out Gunbroker.com and AuctionArms.com and see if anyone is selling the same type rifle you are looking at.
Try doing a search on THR anf TFL and see what others have posted.
Good luck,
S-

Lew Horton Distributing had an ad in March 24th Shotgun News listing an M48 Egyptian Mauser stating:

"The main distinction from all other Mauser rifles is the complete absence of any marking other than the serial number - a true "sanitized rifle". This extremely rare variation was manufatured for Egypt prior to the Suez crisis in 1956, Less than 3000 were completed but only a few hundred were delivered prior to the war. All matching numbers, as new condition. Price on request "

$180 for an unissued m48 with no crest and all of ther accessories is not a bad deal at all. If these rifles were to ever gain any collector value at all, the uncrested m48 (actually its an m48 BO) would probably be worth more as there are supposedly less in circulatation, while m48's and m48a's are litterally a dime a dozen. The last CDNN flyer I read sold m48 and M48A's for about $169 for Excellent condition, not unissued, so $180 doesn';t seem bad at all.

With that being said, I wouldn't hesitate to put down $180 for the rifle as a nice shooter as you might not live long enough for it to be very valuable anyhow:D

I vaguely recall reading of M48s made for Egypt that lacked any crests, and I also vaguely recall them being slightly more expensive than your typical M48.
