I've got a lead on a Yugo Mauser that sounds a little too good to be true. So someone tell me if this deal smells fishy to them. The guy says the gun is "new" still in cosmoline and the only thing wrong is that the safety is broken. I've never seen an M48 that the safety did work on. He says he'll take $90 for it. Am I crazy to pass this up or does it sound a little too good to be true?

Hard to tell sometimes if the gun is new with a lot of cosmoline on it.

I've never seen an M48 that the safety did work on.

I find that comment interesting as I've never seen one that the safety didn't work on. Are they shipping all the ones with defective safeties to your area!

Anyway as long as it has the original bolt (less likely to have headspace issues) it may be had to pass on this deal. I'd "clean it a little for free" to check the bore and the rest of the rifle before I bought.

It does seem like a deal though even if the rifle is a little used.

The last two Yugos that I bought had safeties that wouldn't work. One was junked except for the action anyway and I put a Buhler safety on it. The other one didn't work either and I ended up selling it anyway. Heck to me, I'd pay $90 just for the action and bolt for a custom project later as long as it was tight and didn't have any headspace problems.

Okay he sent me pictures. It doesn't look like any M48 that I've ever seen. Below the crest on the receiver it doesn't say anything at all and doesn't look anything as been polished off either. It has a straight bolt handle to? M48s I've seen have a turned down handle. What is this thing? I'll try to get pictures up here. I think I might have answered my own question. It looks like a 24/47. Am I wrong? The guy kept calling it a M48 so I was confused why he couldn't tell me if it was an A or B model.

24/47.

He's probably been dinkin' with it because the cocking piece & the safety wing are missing, & the bolt shroud is turned 90 degrees to the right of where it should be.

That said, if it were me...I'd snag it.

Regards, Hud

I'll betcha a dollar he tried to open the bolt with the safety was in the locked position. That didnt work, so he smacked the bolt handle with a hammer until it came open. When it did, he found that the safety was binding, so he figured out how to strip the bolt. When he did that, the part that broke off the safety fell out, and he tossed it in the trash with the safety, and the cocking piece...

Still a good buy for $90.00

How big of a problem is all of that? With the cocking piece broke and the safety wing missing, will it even fire? Is this a major worry? Should I replace the whole bolt assembly? I wonder if I could pick it up for $75?

And you're saying the shroud is turned 90 degrees in a direction is shouldn't be? Does that mean its been twisted or torqued wrong?

That rifle will not fire in that condition, and will need at least a few parts to work.

You need a safety, cocking piece, and perhaps a firing pin and spring.

And you're saying the shroud is turned 90 degrees in a direction is shouldn't be? Does that mean its been twisted or torqued wrong?

It looks like it needs a 3/4 turn CW to snap into place, but without a cocking piece, it doesn't matter.

Think I could just buy a new shroud assembly and replace that? I looks like it's been taken apart and the guy didn't know how to reassemble it. I got him down to $75 for it. I asked for several more pictures of just the bolt taken from different angles so we'll see.

Alright there's a good chance I'll pick it up. But I want to see pictures of the bolt first. I've found some places online to buy the bolt parts but once you add them, they'd cost me more than I paid for the gun and make it just as much as buying one with no problems. I'm hoping you won't gouge me on the prices. :D

I just sold a similar 24/47, with all matching numbers for 160.00, but this one your looking at has much nicer wood and bluing. I'd grab it for 90.00 no problem.
