RIA can be had for very little money ($324 from Sarco). I got a 5" off Gunbroker for $380 shipped. Haven't had an actual gun related problem at all, not even after replacing the hammer, trigger, and grip safety, and refinishing to matte stainless, all done myself. Feeds hollow points just as good as FMJ. I can make the bullet holes touch at 10 yards, and it keeps pretty tight groups further out. If I had to do it again, I would just buy the Tactical model since it already has all the upgrades I mentioned.

Just think of what all you could do with the $200 or so you save. RIA totally blows the stereotype of get what you pay for by offering one of the most respected and underestimated 1911's out there for one unbeatable price. IMHO

The Rock Island Tactical I have is flawless, except when using the mag it came with did not even get through 8 rounds before jamming. Using a Wilson 47D mag after that has never had a problem since. I guess my point is if you get one don't use their mag, and you won't be sorry.

Jimmy,

Correct me if I'm wrong but the sights, grip, and mags would have to be replaced in order to get a "keeper", yeah?

That's probably 300 more... doesn't that equal a Spinger-loaded (stainless even)?

Everyone who owns an RIA:

I looked a review of the tactical with pictures here: http://www.m1911.org/ezine/RIATactical.htm

Is this a good representation of the RIA Tactical 1911?

Regards...

Tho only thing I replaced is the mag. If I had $800-$900 to spend on a 1911 Springfield Loaded would be the one I'd buy out of the two, but if all I had was $500 I would take Rock Island over anything else in the $500 class. Now unless you come across a steal of a deal. To answer your question if you had to put another $300 in it to be a keeper I think you should buy a SA Loaded. I would not put $300 in a Rock Island.

as much as the Springfield, Kimber, or Taurus
Toss the Taurus out of the discussion with Springfield and Kimber, it doesn't belong there. Add Colt to the discussion.

Hah, ended up purchasing a used s&w camfour 1911sc. It had all the components I was looking for and at a good price.

Shoots nice too... go figure. Whoever said, "why not a smith"... well you won!

Regards,
Beau

Of the ones you mentioned, I'd definitely go with the Dan Wesson Pointman 7. Oops, didn't mention that one? My bad, after the DW, I suppose I'd stick with the Springer.
