I Really Need a .22 Rifle...

I've actually been doing a lot of thinking and I have fallen in love with the CZ 455 Lux. It's perfect, although it doesn't have peep sights. The sights seem more than satisfactory and it seems like a terrific rifle.

Another one to consider is a Remington Fieldmaster, which is a .22 pump action. My dad grew up shooting one, and he got me one of my own when I was 15. Quite accurate, super reliable, handles .22 shorts and longs if you want to shoot something other than LR. Just throwing it out there as an option.

Need a bolt action 22 rifle...?

My suggestion is a Savage Mark II with the peep sights. If you don't like the composite stock, you can always buy an after market stock to fit it easily.

Second choice would be CZ 452 Trainer. It has excellent sights, but not peep sights.

I'd buy a Savage and probably be happy with it. Having said that, last weekend we had my CZ-452 out to the range and even at 100 yards, it's such a sweet shooter. I was shooting at a large sheet of ice I set up against the target stand and I could see the holes as they appeared. I wasn't that hard to put shot after shot in the same place and just watch the hole grow bigger. Back when I first got it I had it scoped and it literally will put five shots into the same one-hole group at 50 yards.
I use the issue military style sights now because I just find them a lot more fun. Walking an aluminum can around with a .22 at 100 yards or more is something everyone should try from time to time.

Now that's my kind of shooting. I had to install a Lyman peep on mine because of my age. But I still prefer to shoot an iron sighted rifle.

If you still want peeps, go for the Williams FP-CZ dedicated rear peep that works with the stock front sight, or contact user "Brnomann" on RimfireCentral.com and ask him about Brno peep sight sets for CZ rifles.

If you stumble onto a good deal for a Browning SA-22, grab it! It's probably gonna be out of your price range but you might get lucky on a used one.

CZguy - I love my 452 but I'm thinking that with a set of tech sights the 10/22 could also be a lot of fun for "long range" .22 plinking.

Some others on my mind are the ubiquitous Ruger 10/22

There are so many after-market parts for this one. You can customize them to your hearts desire.

Winchester Model 1912, made 1914

I have a real old Winchester, serial # wait for it..... 826. That's right 826. It is nickel steel barrel. What is the best way to bring it up to almost original condition. Can you re-nickel it or just re-blu it. What will happen to the value if I do it either wasy? Thanks

Welcome to the high road dadsvenom.

Photo's would be very helpful, and you may want to start your own thread. But as a general rule refinishing old guns ruins the value.

Savage Mk. II

I picked this little toy up the other day. Savage Mk. II F. It doesn't have the AccuTrigger and the stock leaves something to be desired. However, for what I paid, it is easy to get over those two small things. Besides, the trigger is very short and the pull is pretty light. I might put a small scope on it and plink away a box of 500. :D

I'd say hit the gun shows and buy every $5-$20 beater and refinish them. You're bound to find to find a nice rifle under all the gunk. You'll find it becomes very addictive and a nice hobby, and a money maker when you sell them for $100 after clean up.

Walt, you've got better gunshows than I do around here. I never see $20 rifles, and I look hard. It's almost unheard of to find anything under $100 anymore. :( If you do find a $20 rifle, it's unlikely to be worth $100 with a cleaning, it will almost certainly need repair.

Dadsvenom,
Welcome to THR, but open another thread instead of hijacking this one. You'll get plenty of replies. Especially if you post pics, we love 'em.

Nice little arsenal you have there. I picked up a nib Savage model 93RFV .17HMR yesterday. I'm bedding the stock before the first round goes down range. Wish I could get one of those guys at Quantico to work it over!;)

"When one engine fails on a twin-engine airplane you always have
enough power left to get you to the scene of the crash."

And, if it is at night take it down to 500ft and turn the landing light on. If you don't like what you see . . . turn it off!

Ya, Red, I guess you're probably right. It's been quite a while since I've done this(10-15 yrs). Around here the shows got smaller and smaller till they pretty much dried up. But under all the grime and rust was some nice walnut and pretty accurate shooters.

That said, I'm sure it's still pretty easy to find some neglected guns for cheap and with a little time and effort, one could have something that would bring you more pleasure than a new gun would. But then, I just like older guns better.

See if you can find a vintage Remington 5 teen series, 510,512, etc. Bolt action, solid, simple, relatively inexpensive. If you can find a nice one, it'll hold its value, too. I have a 1949 Model 512. Tube mag, bolt action. She's a corker. Many squirrels and rabbits have met their match. Out of 5 or 6 .22s she's my favorite. Might be because she was given to me gently used on my 10th birthday by a family friend. Wow that was 40 years ago. Lots of good memories with that one!

When I was a teenager in the '70's, I used a lever .22lr to win a Winchester Model 190 .22lr in a gun club shooting contest. The Model 190 turned out to be the funnest gun I ever owned. As a kid, nothing like being able to shoot off about 17 rounds of .22lr as fast as your finger will pull the trigger. I shot many, many thousands of rounds with that gun. Just over the Christmas break, I cleaned that dirty gun up and plan on taking it out again ... can't wait.

I have a Savage 64 myself, it shoots great and I like it don't get me wrong. But I really wanted a bolt action, still do. Just something about the bolt that is more appealing to me I guess. I have to sell my 64 before I can get a bolt though.....wife's rule :(

Either way, there are a lot of great suggestions here for you so it all comes down to your preferance. Marlin makes a great .22 as does savage, Ruger's 10/22 can look pretty much like whatever you want it to with all its crazy options (I like how they shoot too....not a bolt though!) It's all pretty much pick and go. I know I'm no help......
