I refinished my stock on my SKS.

I did a sand down, sweat out the cosmoline, and refinish with linseed oil finish years ago. Couldn't believe how nice that thing turned out! Wish I had pictures, but for perspective I sold it for 300 bucks when most SKS were going for 150... Nice rifle OP.

I did my SKS a few years ago—I was pretty pleased how it turned out. It’s a fun project.

I also put on a military sling.
Nice! Now shoot it out to 500 yards like this guy with iron sights (Shooting starts at 4:00 minute) :)

Nice!
I like his videos. My range goes to 300 yards. I did it with my Mosin and the irons. The SKS will be my next goal.

Is that Ruska? I have a Russian SKS, but the stock is in very good condition, I'd hate to lose that kind of typical reddish Rooskie finish. However, yours looks very nice.

I just realized I got my SKS confused with my AK. The AK has the Reddish Rooski stain. The AK is Romanian, but I put a stock set on it that I believe came off a Rooskie gun. The SKS, which is Russian, looks almost like the wood was lightly burnt to darken it. It is not a arsenal re-furb, I believe it's an unissued rifle, but have no way of confirming that, other than it's perfect condition, and not being a rebuild.

I think I may have tried the Red Oak 215 on a stock, but didn't get the typical reddish/Russian color. ?

This post got me to pull out my SKS and admire her. She's got a lot of scratches and dents in the stock and it's still got cosmoline in the pores I'll wager. Love these guns.
I can relate to that. The weird thing is that I pulled the SKS out for the first time in a while, this morning, and then I saw this post. !!!!!

I would advise against refinishing military weapons.

The first centerfire rifle I ever owned was a M1 Carbine. The first thing I did before even shooting it was sanded off the marred up original finish, steamed out all the dings and dents then put a new beautiful finish on it. I was very proud of that beautiful M1 carbine... but the longer I have owned it the more I regret having refinished it. I removed a good bit of history of the weapon. The sweat and blood that was soaked into the stock. Some day I will buy a stock from that matches the original manufacture of the M1 carbine to put it back in a more original status... if I can find one.

This is just my experience, they are your rifles and you can of course do what you want with them.

Cheers!
