So I show up an hour before Academy opens and was 7th in line. I picked up a 100 round box of Winchester 40s&w and a 525 round box of Remington 22lr. That wasn't the score though. The score was a case of Winchester 250 grain LFN cowboy action velocity 45 Long Colt. It was just sitting out in the back where they keep the rest of the ammo. Just sitting there. So I opened the box and found the treasure. I took 2 boxes, one friend took five and another took 3. The 45lc was selling for $40 for a box of 50.

What did you pay for the 40cal? There is a Dicks about an hour from me, haven't been there to see what they have or they're prices. I reload my 357's.

Glad you found what you were looking for. Always nice to feel lucky from time to time.

Now what ya need to do is keep the brass to reload for way way less than $40 for 50 rounds.

wow @ those panic prices, obviously ammo is never going to come back down to 2012 levels

Lol, maybe now QoT's "never going to be ammo again at reasonable prices" posts will slow to a mere trickle

I wouldn't wait around hoping they come back down to pre-panic prices. While prices should come back down some, basic economic theory suggests that prices will remain higher than they were before the panic. The panic did two things to generation a structural -- or more or less permanent -- increase in long term demand. First, there are a lot of new gun owners, and their demand is now added to the general level of demand. Second, a lot of people will be rethinking the levels of supply they need to keep on hand to avoid being caught short next time. I expect supply to slowly come back, and prices to drop a little, but not back to where they were before the panic.

They only thing I can think of that would bring prices back down significantly would be a significant increase in production capacity. And even that would come at a cost, so that prices would not fall all the way back to where they were. Those prices could not support the new production capacity. But I don't know that anybody is planning major increases in production capacity. From what I've observed, casually, the supplier response has been to increase output by adding more shifts, not adding more plant.

It is purely SWAG, but expect prices to ease off about half of the increase we've seen, if that.

Oh my. Someone understands. I can't handle that.

Me either. I mean, 3.8 cents per round of 22, that's insane. 37 cents for 40 S&W in a brick and mortar location, what a change. But man, that $5 price hike on 45 Colt from the price two years ago, that's the killer.

Ooookay. You scored, but they won. :uhoh:
Won what? A battle,maybe. The war,probably not.

No I don't see prices coming back down. I don't like paying these prices but I'm not ready to give up shooting so I buy what I can as cheaply as I can. As for the 45LC one LGS has Magtech @ $50 for a box of 50. I got the 50 round box of Winchester for $40. Its more than I want to pay but this was the first 45LC I've seen since December so I bought it.

Right before we discovered that unopened box of 45LC sitting out a guy grabed five 20 round boxes of 45LC PD ammo of the shelf. It was piced at $40 for a box of 20 and he was quite happy to get it. He was grining ear to ear and very happy to have gotten it. He said so to all.

I could have had one box of 40 s&w in 180 grain JHP @ $21.99 for a box of 50 but went with the 100 round box of Winchester @ $36.99.

Prices are also going up on the ammo I'm finding at Academy. I've seen $1 a box increases on 223/556,45acp and 9mm recently. One can expect more price increases.

Well Cabela's is getting ammo shipements Herters 223 55 & 62 grain for 6.99 a box of 20 + taxes & shipping. 5 box max. For me it ended up to be .46 a round with everything included. 2nd time in about a month they've had this price, it at least keeps me shooting.

I was talking to the owner of my LGS about a month ago asking about availabiliy of something and I asked him about the pricing on ammunition and what he thought was going to happen. He pretty much said 2012 prices are gone, but that was in the offing last year anyway. He told me that in addition to the panic buying price raises, the manufacturers had notified retail outlets last summer that there was going to be an industry wide price increase during the 1st Qt. of 2013.
I don't know if that' straight up (he had no reason to lie to me or exaggerate this point) so this is just a FWIW.
Who knows? We'll see.
