I shot my chrony today.

Well, not the electronic portion but two of the metal rods on one side supporting the plastic arches that span across my pro-digital chronograph. I was shooting at a 50 yard target with my Remmy 700 .223 VLS sighting in my reloads. I wasn't getting any data from the chrony due to it being set up in the shade so, I decided to leave it out there until I finished the paper consisting of four targets I was shooting at. I couldn't figure out why one of my four targets had only four holes in it until I glanced up at my chonograph. The rear rod was almost shot in half with the bullet grazing the front rod. I thought I was shooting though the inverted triangle but, I guess I was wrong. It is hard to see those rods sitting ten feet in front of the gun while looking through a scope. Anyway, could anyone suggest a sutable replacement instead of ordering two new replacement rods.

Check the diameter of the ones that are left, and see if any of the available welding rods are of suitable diameter. I've heard of people shooting the electronic part, but usually only at IPSC matches! I'm not sure which is worse -- shooting your own or someone else's! Good luck. They really are an invaluable loading tool.

Some chrono's need shooting.

Once the rods, or screens get preforated obliterated - the replacements better behave and never cause problems again.

Oh...and funny how the chrono better gets into position and yardage when one produces a shotgun to test loads - and slugs.

Well it was "still functioning" after the 1 1/2 oz XX Magnum load of #2...the AA 1oz rifled slug stopped an Immediate Twitch

Never liked that chrono...figured out a way to get a new one - better one even after new rods and screens...

Just point slugs at the unit itself. Like the man said Get the CNS - lights out

Had to help a buddy figure out to a get new one too...

You really aren't a confirmed reloader until you have shot your own Chrony. I found my top rod 55 yards down range, an unofficial Canadian record for rod tossing while shooting a .38 S&W Webley. Found in only 49 minutes of searching, another unoffical record.

In answer to yr question...

Flip180--The instructions that came with my Shooting Chrony (or mebbe it was discussion on THR?) suggested that if the metal rods were shot, the plastic sockets for the rods would also be destroyed, rendering the Chrony useless. The idea is to replace those sturdy metal rods with something more fragile than the base of the Chrony.

A local lumber store had thin dowels, 'way less than 1/4" diameter, that were only a little too thick. Reduced the ends of the dowels on my belt sander, until one end fit into the Chrony base socket, and the other end fit into the socket on the "shade screen" thing. The dowels could be whittled down with a knife, but the sander offered better control it seemed. Anyhow, that method worked.

If I shoot one of those thin dowels, it'll splinter but the rest of the Chrony will survive--at least, that's the plan! Made up a couple extra of the reduced-ended dowels for spares. Haven't needed a replacement yet (knock wood.) And the Chrony works just fine with wood dowel supports rather than the metal rods Chrony supplied.

Sorry you shot 2 of yr support rods--hope the rest of the device survived.

+1 on the wooden dowels. I've shot a few of those. I never use the metal rods.

I remember someone the other week saying they use them bamboo skewers from the grocery store that you use for shishkabob. They're like 100/$2 or something so shoot them all you want.

Yep, could not figure why mine started reading "Error 2". Then I noticed the two right rods were missing, Hmm, walked out and saw that I had nicked the top of the front reader and drilled the back one. Oh well, sent it and a check to Chrony, new one should be here shortly.

Welcome to the club! I've shot mine twice and yes it still works. Welding rods make great replacements.
