I slugged my Hi-Point carbine

My 995 shoots groups of about 5 -6" at 50 yds. From what I've read, others get better groups than that.

So, I thought I'd check the bore size to see if that might be an issue.

I used a lead .38 spl wadcutter and ran it through the barrel with a hammer and wooden dowel rod.

After the process, the slug measured (at it's max dia) a little over .355, maybe .3555.

I've been shooting reloads using Berry's 115gr copper-plated RN bullets.

Do you think it might help improve my rifle's accuracy if I switched to a .38spl (.357 dia) bullet?

mic your bullets, sometimes the plated bullets are a bit undersized.

if they mic at advertized size, try some factory ammo and see how it does.


also, are you loading them with the same data as lead bullets?

afaik the plated bullets are supposed to be loaded around the same velocity as lead bullets.

Nothing wrong with using .357 LEAD bullets in that gun, provided the rounds will chamber. The only problem with this is that you need to use a light bullet weight (lots of .357/38spl bullets are too heavy/take up too much space in the case), and closely watch seating depth/powder charge. Also, most cast bullets for .357 are actually .358 or .359. Make sure. Otherwise you might have to run them through a sizer to get a true .357.

I use lead 9mm bullets, and they are sized by the caster to .3565. Try something like that, and also try changing your loads or powder.
