I think I'm right eye dominant. I'm right handed, but sometimes I think I'm left eye dominant. What's the simple test I can do? Isn't it the one where you close one eye and see where your thumb is compared to the background? People I'm shooting with always tell me my eyes are screwed up. It seems TO ME like both eyes are always fighting for dominance.

It's possible that they are. It's odd but the more you THINK about your eye dominance the more likely it is to get all funky like that. Im convinced that eye dominance is about 90% MIND versus biology. I had really weak dominance for a long time. What i did was make a concious effort to force my right eye to be dominant during day to day activities, driving was a good one. And when you get to the range just DONT even think about it. Let your eyes do it for you. It may take awhile but, you'll get it eventually.

It may have something to do with the fact that my father writes right handed, but throws a softball or baseball left handed. I know that's totally WEIRD!!!! But it's true.

My mother is also somewhat like that. I'm not ambidextrous at all, but other people pick up on it, like I'll eat my dinner with with my left hand and not even notice while other people will be like ***. Still, I write like a kindergartener with my left hand.

I don't know if that has anything to do with it, but you never know! I'm definately right handed by far and use it for all activities.

It's possible for neither eye to be strongly dominant. The basic test is to extend your arms in front, overlap your index fingers and thumbs so that you have roughly 1" triangle formed by the area between the thumbs and forefingers. Look through this opening with both eye open at an object across the room. Slowly bring your arms in while leaving both eyes open and keeping focus on the object. The eye that is least dominant should be covered by the hand while the most dominant should be uncovered when your hands are fully retracted to the face.

Just make a circle with thumb and forefingers and, with both eyes open, center an object between the fingers. Close one eye, then the other. The eye that can't see the object is weak, whereas the one that still sees the object centered is dominant.

Ok, hmmm.....I guess I'm right eye dominant according to the test. I sometimes have a little problem with depth perception though it seems. Thanks for the help.

Another variation of what unlucky said is
Just make a circle with thumb and forefingers and, with both eyes open, center an object between the fingers. Then bring your hands back towards your face, your hands will naturally move to your dominate eye.

It's actually kind of creepy.... but it works!:D

I hate the "make a circle with your fingers" thing.

For me, when I do it that way, I am left eyed if I use my right hand, and right eyed if I use my left hand.

Of course, if I do the use-both-hands-and-make-a-triangle thing, I get about the same results. :uhoh:

I've concluded I have no dominant eye, or (at the very least) that my eye dominance changes from one day to the next.

*shrug* I can still hit the target, though.

As long as you have the correct sight picture does it matter?:) What if when you really need it, you get a poke in the "dominant" eye ? Waddaya gonna do ? Practice, Practice, Practice.

I'm the opposite. I write left handed, but do most other things right handed. My left eye is definately dominant.

When I was in elementary school the teachers seemed to encourage everyone to be right handed. All they succeeded in doing was screwing me up. :)

I sort of have a thing too but it goes away when I shoulder a rifle.
When I was a kid I noticed this thing...
My mom was on the phone and I was looking at the cord. One way it looked like the cord was the right distance and the other way it looked like it was right in front of me, if that makes any sense.

I'm extreamly left eye dominant and right handed. With practice it doesn't really matter much. I usually shoot with both eyes open.

I write left-handed most of the time and primarily shoot right-handed, and I'm right-eye dominant. (Of course, my vision is perfect in my left eye but a bit worse in my right, blah.)

It seems like I tend to prefer doing things that require grace with my left hand and things that require strength--like the aforementioned ball-throwing--with my right.
