I think I have the revolver bug!!!

My father always taught me that revolvers were the way to go. But it was my wife who convinced me. She lost faith in semi-autos after her Beretta Tomcat suffered a cracked frame after less than 50 rounds. That resulted in a jam every other round and now she expects every semi to jam when she pulls the trigger. But she loves her revolver; and if momma is happy, then I am happy. So I started looking at a few for myself and I noticed that I am growing attached to the look and feel of a revolver. I prefer Ruger over S&W for Home Defense and Woods carry, but I prefer the J-frame over the LCR.

Now that I am hooked, I am looking for a .44 Magnum. More to the point, what should every revolver guy have? What do you recommend? Give me some images; I want to see what you have.

[You will notice that I am NOT a fan of the internal lock. Ruger has started using one and that was one of many reasons I did not get an LCR. Neither of my J-frames have a lock].

My Father in law has a Ruger Super Blackhawk, and I like it quite a bit.

I was thinking about picking one up myself. I like double action .357s but something about that big .44 and single action just seem to go so well together.
 
Every revoler guy needs, and not in any particular order
1. snub .38 J frame or equivelent Ruger/Colt ( small .357 could be substituted here)
2. 4" DA .357 mag
3. 5" or longer .44 Mag
4. At least 1 SA revolver
(#3 & #4 may be the same gun)
This is minimum.

Any auto pistols owned must number no more than half the number of revolvers owned. Also no plastic autos unless at least one 1911 and one Browning Hi-Power are owned.

Now the following is optional-if you want to be a dedicated revolver guy.
At least one revolver in .45 Colt
At least one revolver in .44 Special (a .44 mag that you shoot specials from doesn't count)
At least one S&W M10
At least one revolver in .45 ACP
At least one revolver from each of the "big three" revolver makers (S&W, Colt, Ruger)
One copy of the most current edition of "Standard Catolog of Smith & Wesson"

Every revolver guy needs a good .38 caliber target revolver. Either a Colt Officer's Model Target, or a S&W K38 Target Masterpiece. You should also have a 4" small frame 22lr kit gun of some sort such as the Ruger Bearcat or S&W Model 34 or 63

If the .44Mag would be a range and plinking fun gun then I fully agree that a Ruger Black would be an amazing way to go if you want a SA revolver at some point. Otherwise my own leanings would be towards a Ruger Redhawk in whatever barrel you want or a S&W 29, the original Dirty Harry gun.
 
I got the revolver bug about three years ago and I'm also partial to Rugers.
I have about ten revolvers in my small collection consisting of one Colt, three S&W's, and six Rugers. The problem is that once you find that 44 your looking for, you'll just find a need for another revolver, and another and another. When I went for a 44, I went with the Ruger Super Redhawk. After that I found a 4" Security Six. After that I said to myself, Damn, now I need a 2-3/4" Security Six and I was fortunate to find this unfired one NIB. That was a couple of months ago and my last revolver purchase. Now Im thinking Hmmm, I only have one single action....The wanting never seems to stop.

Looking good Zebraranger.

How do you like that Super-Redhawk. I am looking for a .44 Mag because it can address every possible scenario I could encounter in the mountains of Colorado. Have you ever carried that Redhawk around? Is it a hassle?
 
I was a dedicated semi-automatic pistol guy for MANY years. I got a Ruger Blackhawk in .45LC as I wanted a single-action....just because. I started reloading .45LC and thought I might like a double action, so I decided I wanted a S&W stainless Mountain Gun with a 4 inch barrel in .45LC. It took me about two years of scouring gun shows before I found one in great shape (625-6)...and I picked it up for $650. It is probably the best purchase I have made. It is deadly accurate and great fun to shoot.

I decided I wanted a snubbie in .45LC and bought a Taurus 450 and that certainly did the job.

I reload .45ACP as well and decided I wanted a revolver in that caliber. I recently picked up a used S&W325pd at the Washington Arms Collectors gun show (again for $650) and I love it.

I have shot it extensively at it is almost as accurate as the Mountain Gun. Some folks complain about the moon clips, but I have a moon/de-mooner, lot's of clips, and I don't have a problem with them. I picked up some 1/3 moon clips (2 rounds) when I don't want to carry bulky full moons. It weighs 24 oz loaded and in my Kramer IWB holster it rides high and conceals very well. Shoots great and the recoil doesn't bother me.

So, I still have the bug and am now looking for a S&W 10mm/40cal revolver (as I reload those as well).

I carry one of these revolvers or one of my automatics (Glock 23C, Glock 36, Kimber full size custom classic) and shoot them all a lot.

So welcome to the revolver bug world, doesn't mean you need to give up your autos though.

I picked up the reloading bug also. In fact, the first revolver I bought was a .38 Special and the popularity of it as a reloadable caliber resulted in me wanting to start reloading.

I was wondering why you decided on .45LC. It looks like a capable round and easily reloaded (relatively). Have you been able to find lead and brass on a regular basis?

There are a couple of reasons I went to .45LC.
1. It is a historic round, been around a long time. .45ACP was developed to take advantage of the new smokeless powders...shorten the case.
2. It is a proven man-stopper and in some guns, can be loaded up to .44 mag levels (although I wouldn't shoot heavy loads in the S&W or Taurus).

I have had no problem finding brass or bullets. I can get the brass at the gun show I attend (Washington Arms Collectors). I generally buy Rainier copper clad bullets (don't like handling lead)and have had no problems getting those (generally through Dillon)...they are running about $85 per 500. I've been loading those 250gr bullets over 7.5-8 gr of Unique. I chose Unique as it is little "fluffier" and fills that old "blackpowder designed" case a little better. However, after I use up that Unique, I'm going to try some Titegroup based loads.

Tow of my favorite revolvers are my 4" 1948 M&P and my 2" 1975 M36.
Nothing like owning and shooting "THE" service revolver and it's BUG, both in Blue and wood...

The Revolver Bug

I own a "few" Modern Wheel Guns but my favorate Woods revolver is a Super Redhawk Alaskan, in 44. Mag, with a 2.5 inch barrel. Sarah was designed as a trail companion for those up close and personal moments when you just don't feel like playing dead for a bear or some other predator.

She's a bit heavy so I had a shoulder holster made that is up to the job.

I got the bug this year. A few .357's, a bunch of .45 Colt, Ruger and S&W, and most recently a S&W 18- K22.

I reload, so shoot light .38 Specials in the .357s and mild .45 Colts target loads most of the time in the .45s. Both calibers can be loaded hot.
 
I've had one 38special and sold it like an idiot and have sinced wanted another one. Everytime I go to the gunshops nothing in the store catches my eyes like a revolver. I look at all the 1911,s, plastic guns and still I go back to the revolver section cause they are so pretty. I am currently on amission to get a revolver again in my greedy hands. I have the bug and it does not go away. The only remedy is a revolver in my hands again. I either want a Smith n Wesson or a Ruger SP101. Those are the only ones that catch my eye. You guys are making my revolver sickness worse, please don't stop.
