www.rmrbullets.com ( a known and trusted vendor, IMHO) has 110 gr plated 30 cal, and 170gr plated 30 cal. Not for max pressure, but any port in a storm, ya know......

Lee doesn't make these all the time, either. They come and go in cycles. The 6 cavities are already sold out. For $19.00, you might wanna pick up a two-banger, just in case you do get that desperate!

For gas checks, it looks like you would have to go to Ebay and buy someone's homemade checks at the full price of Hornady checks. But I hear they work ok. Cast Boolits gets some group buys on Gator checks, every now and then. I dunno about current availability.

I was shooting 1500 or so Hornady SP's a year. Since getting my Bator mold, a few months ago, I've shot cast, near exclusively. I have to clean my gas piston out after every couple hundred rounds, and the blunt nose leads to the occasional feed jam, but it's well worth it for me.

I'd have to be pretty desperate to shoot 55 gr pills at the velocity lead requires.

Even with a GC.

I've yet to have to do so, and the idea of boring out my gas tube to get the lead out does not excite me.

Now, If I had a .223 bolt gun, sure.

Small caliber cast bullets seem to handle higher velocities. I dunno why. Same thing with sizing. Small caliber bullets are known to size without lube, where larger calibers need to be lubed, first.

Some have chronoed hard alloy GC'd 223 bullets at > 2600 fps with no leading.

And anyhow, a lot of people like shooting 40 gr lead pills at only 1200 fps. :)

As for "boring out" the gas tube, lol. Nothing like that. The lead flakes off easily with a simple brush. Dry brush. No oil, no solvent, no fuss. This is nothing like lead fouling in a barrel. It's only if you let the lead build up so much that parts seize up where you get a headache. Then the parts don't wanna come apart easy until you soak with Hoppe's or something. But once you get the parts out, the lead comes out easy as before. Some people don't get any lead through the gas port, at all. I guess it has to do with your alloy/lube and/or the shape of the gas hole in the barrel.

If you're afraid to take apart your AR for routine cleaning, then yeah. Cast isn't worth it. Put your AR back in the gunsafe on its pedestal and wait for the jacketed bullets to come back in stock.

Get over to powder valley, they have some hornady .223(.224) bullets in 55 gr and above now, not bulk packages, but they are selling.
 
I have noticed Cabelas shows some stock periodically, keep checking them. I ordered several boxes yesterday for $13.99 / 20 rd box, Winchester white boxes of .223. They aren't here yet, but Cabelas is pretty good about accuracy on stock.
 
I just got two emails from Natchez yesterday that they had my request ready to ship. It was for Sierra Game Kings. 500 165 grain 2154s and 500 165 grain 2140s. I ended up buying elsewhere.
