I think my home possibly got probed for burglary or a home invasion...

Do you belong to a homeowners association? If so just check with them.

I take issue with you assuming that the black person in the car on a public street was up to no good. It sounds like the same attitude that got the Martin kid killed. I would be watching for vans as they blend in better in the neighborhood and leave the race thing totally out of it.
If we can't use race in the description then I take offense that the word "woman" and "man" were used. I would think it would be much better if we used the words "human being" when describing someone.

ChCx2744 - I had another thought. Do you "look" like a cop? Maybe she saw your carry weapon and thought, Oh, this guy is a cop.

Without garnishing the details, yes. There is good reason for that too, lol. Yeah well, anything that serves as a deterrent is okay in my book.

I made up a sign;

NO SOLICITING
WE BUY MEAT AT THE MARKET
MAGAZINES BY MAIL
HOME REPAIR FROM LICENSED CONTRACTORS
WE ARE FIRM IN OUR RELIGION AND FAITH

I think I'm gonna print one of these out in Microsoft Word and laminate it at Kinko's lol.

I know this is an old thread that people seem to keep piling into, but I'll add that it definitely sounds like the Kirby sales pitch. My wife had it happen to her...she let them in to clean....and I had the same "holy crap, we just got cased" thoughts.

This sales person made the same pitch to numerous houses in my neighborhood (a bedroom community in a small town which hosts a military base), and thusfar there hasn't been a big crime spree.

As was posted earlier, this sales pitch fits the vacuum sales MO perfectly. I'd be irritated at the sales person mentioning that they were part of the HOA -- that was obviously false. If you had a name or business card, you could file a complaint with the vacuum cleaner company.

Obviously the advice presented in this thread -- basically to not let a salesperson into your house for any reason -- is great advice. These situations COULD absolutely be criminal casing your house for future burglary.

You're probably okay in this situation...

Don't forget to set your house alarm and lock the doors when you leave, though!

Your HOA is the best bet. If these people are casing houses in the neighborhood, yours may not be the only report they have received. Our community association sends out blast e-mails when they get reports like this.

ChCx, as a guy who once (long, long ago) tried his hand at selling vaccuum cleaners, i can tell you itDOES sound like she was setting you up for a 'robbery', specifically, the buying a $2,000 vaccuum cleaner kind, LOL.

That said, you might need a sign on your door. NOT the 'I have guns' kind, but one that says:

*** NO SOLICITATION ***
I AM NOT interested in your religion, and I DO NOT buy from salesmen.

I answer the door armed with a CCW BUG. Maybe I am paranoid, but since that day time breakin, I am not the only one

Me too, every time. Sadly, we don't live in a perfect world, might as well be ready.

Not turning this into a Kirby vacuum cleaner thread but they are a prime example of a poor (actually dangerous) business plan. The days of DTD sales are over. That's what I tried to explain to the local operator.

I believe I need to go with the sign ideas posted here. I'd love to not be rude to people and maybe all of the warnings will keep me from having to do so.

When someone interrupts me at home by phone or knock on the door they are trying to satisfy THEIR agenda, not mine. I am always abrupt with DTD if I answer at all and always let caller ID monitor my phone.

My problem is that I live in a remote area in a rural county, and I am the last one on a clearly signed "NO OUTLET" road. I consider each person turning around in my road to be a potential problem. Yes, the race thing does come into play as I live in a 99% white county. So, if an "african american gentleman" comes snooping around I will be on alert.

Home invasion is an ugly thing and happens almost exclusively in a home, so be prepared and carry in your home. Never allow anyone into your home and if you do, do not display your guns.Guns are just like cash or jewelry; major value in a small package.
