two things

First off my vote is for a nice buckmark, at this point i personally would choose it over a current generation Ruger, but that's b/c i liked it the way it was as the MkII.

second

The High Standards are also excellent guns although a bit more money as I recollect.

if you look at a High Standard, make sure it's a "real" HS (ie pre- Mitchell) the current "High Standard" does not maintain anywhere near the same quality standards as the original company. the older guns are great if they're in god repair etc. the new ones... their reputation is not good. and lets leave it at that or this will be a long reply;)

I tried a P22 once. I dropped the mag several times during one magazine, by accidently hitting the mag release. They are a little finicky with ammo, but they (at least the one I shot) are pretty accurate, for plinking.

I have a Buckmark and a Ruger 22/45. Both are good shooters but I prefer the feel of the Buckmark for myself. My daughter(she's 35 yrs old) has a Walther P22 and she likes it. I have shot it too--it's a fun little gun and looks cool but doesn't seem to be as accurate as the Buckmark or the 22/45.
I would go for the Buckmark or the 22/45 depending on which one feels better in your duaghters hands.

My daughter shoots all of my handguns, cz75 9mm & .22...S&W mod 10 in .38 and others but her favorite is a 50's vintage Hi-Standard. The older ones are the only ones to buy. They come in price ranges from ~$200 to ~$900. A good one can appreciate in value. Great guns to hand down.

Magazines are expensive.
Mine has been ammo sensitive, the only "negatives " I can think of.

My daughter had a p22 that she never really got into. So we sold it and bought a Buckmark which she really likes. She has been shooting a couple of Take-5rimfire.com matches and she has really had fun. We are building her new gun as an open gun with a ultradot and soon a tactical solutions barrel. If you vist the Take-5 website you will see pictures of her shoting my freinds Buckmark at a match. Actualy,....
