I recently purchase a Leaper's 6x illuminated scope for mw ar, it has a lifetime warranty, and is pretty clear, but given the chance to do it over, I think I might have saved my money for one more week and went with one of the variable vortex scopes. What do you fellers think of it all.

I've had a number of economy scopes with a "lifetime warranty."

1. A Tasco, 4-16X varmint scope had been sighted in several days before. I was sitting behind the barn on my bucket when a coyote presented itself across the field a bit over 200 yards away. It should have been an easy shot but I missed twice. It turned out the scope, when I checked it the next day, was shooting about a foot high. Also, since Bushnell had acquired Tasco, the "lifetime" warranty was void.

2. A Bushnell Trophy handgun scope was mounted by me in T/C Duo-Rings on an Encore handgun chambered for the 460 S&W Magnum cartridge. The scope died. I returned the scope to Bushnell who declined to honor the warranty saying the scope had been "abused." They offered to sell me another one at a discount for eighty some dollars which I declined.

3. Then there was the T/C handgun scope that I then put on the 460 S&W. It promptly died and was promptly replaced by T/C with a new one. The new one also died and was promptly replaced with a better one which I still have. In other words, Thompson/Center actually honors their lifetime warranty.

4. I've also had a number of Leupold scopes which, being used on some firearms with quite heavy recoil, have malfunctioned. Leupold has fixed them each time promptly with no complaint even though I bought them all used.

What I'm getting at, is when and if you're Leaper's scope has died, hopefully Leaper is still in business and will honor your warranty. Also, for the time you use it, you will be deprived of the pleasure that would accrue from using a scope of better quality that would probably be satisfactory for your life time.

Ancient saying: "Penny-wise, pound-foolish." Still true.

I've been using scopes since 1950. Yeah, 1950. No typo. You're better off with a decent quality fixed 4X than an El Cheapo variable. And all this BS about paying as much for a scope as you do for your rifle is just that: BS. Fine if you can afford it, of course--but in no way a necessity.

Why do I have this opinion? Simple. Lotsa dead deer and prairie dogs, not to mention coyotes and jackrabbits.

I am in the same boat as you there Art. I use all Nikon equipment now for one reason, quality optics at a REASONABLE price! I will put up ANY of my scoped weapons against ANY of someone else's topped with their fancy high dollar scope and we will see just how much difference there will be on the targets! Absolutely none! After hundreds of deer, elk, rabbits, squirrels, yotes, bear, bison, hogs, p-dogs, and various other critters, I guess I can say I am somewhat of an advocate. The ONLY Nikon scope I have ever had to fail was a Nikon Encore EER that I had mounted on my .500 S&W. It was replaced immediately with absolutely no questions asked and the new one has had NO problems. This crap about needing optics more expensive than the rifle they are sitting on (unless you have a 50 dollar rifle) is absolute nonsense. you can spend 200-300 dollars and have all the scope you will need for ANYTHING on planet earth.

I agree with you Art, crap you must know what your talking about, you're even older than me, LOL!

This is your Nikon Inc. Full Lifetime Warranty (valid in the Continental United States, Alaska and Hawaii) for new Nikon riflescopes that do not contain electronic
components. This Nikon product is warranted by Nikon Inc. to be free from defects in material and workmanship for the lifetime of the product. If this product is found
to have defects in material or workmanship, Nikon Inc. will at its option and without charge, either repair or replace this product, even if you are not the original
owner. No warranty card is required to obtain warranty service.

Only Leupold has the lifetime repair or replacement warrranty, no questions asked. They probably lose a lot of money by that policy, but it got me and many others as "only Leupold" scope owners! :)

There are a few others out there with lifetime warranties as well. As far as no questions asked, I have only had one Nikon scope fail me. I sent it in, and in 2 weeks I got a brand spanking new scope sent back to me with no questions and a very nice thank you note for using their product.

I've used quite a few Leupolds; like them just fine. Also, Redfield and Weaver. Even had a Tasco World Class 6x24x40 work great on a Bushmaster Match Target, with the adjustments being quite precise and repeatable.

Back in 1997 I gave $99 for a Simmons 44Mag 3x10, mostly out of curiosity. I put it on my pet '06 and ran two or three hundred rounds through it. Fine on my 500-yard range; plenty good for an antelope. A few years back I loaned it to Justin so he could send me some elk steaks. :)

I can see a very-high-end light-gathering scope for limited use. I think of a cloudy day, wanting to be able to home in on Bambi at first legal light in the morning or the last light of evening. I hate to get up that early, but I have seen a few times of an evening when I quit a tad sooner than the law allowed...

I had a Redfield 3X9 I bought back in '66, only reason it went south was it got knocked against a tree while on horseback. I've used Simmon's scopes on all of my varmint rifles, never had any trouble with them, no, possibly not as clear as the $2K kinds out there, but I can still dump P-dogs out to 400 yds with them, what's to complain about? The varmints aren't aware of the inferior glass watching them! LOL

It sounds very much like Leupold's warranty except Leupold's warranty doesn't exclude scopes with electronic components.

lol, yeah I don't think there is a company out there retarded enough to fully lifetime warranty any electronics. Would not be in the best interest of the stock holders to say the least.
