I want a 50 cal. rifle, help me out!!!!

Guys(and gals) this whole stinkshow over the last week pushed me over the edge, I'm going to get a 50. I need to know what to look for, as this is my first foray into this type of rifle.

I've seen spyder conversions for my ar15s, and I know barret makes wonderful stuff. But who else, and where do I look?

I would rather have a top quality basic single shot than a so-so quality rifle with a magazine.

I'm hoping to get into the base rifle for somewhere just above two grand. The glass, bipod, and other accesories would not be considered part of the "base" rifle. They would be extra.

I have an older LAR grissley Big Bore .50; I have to admit I have not shot it as much as I would like (mostly because it's hard to find a range that will allow .50bmg) anyhow, it's a very well made piece, it's simple and heavyduty! The gun itself was about $2000 but then you have to scope it! so you better figure that into the deal....mine is a Leupold tactical 6.5-20 (i think?) it ran me about $700. Unfortunaltly it really does live in my safe though!

Don't forget McMillan. They make some top quality 50BMG rifles as well as top of the line stocks.

The BFG-50, AR-50, and Barrett bolt-actions will all please you. The first two are in your price-range. (kinda.)

If you can, you have to get a Barrett M82A1 however. I know, it's semi-auto, but it's the one you really want. Trust me.

The Barrett M82A1 is awesome, but very pricey at around $7k.

Barrett currently has a package deal on their M99 single-shot rifle (33" heavy barrel, bull-pup design). List on the M99 Kit is $3100. It includes a hard case, 80 rounds of Barrett/IMI ammo (about a $250-350 value), Barrett scope rings, and a Bushnell Elite 3200 scope. If you subtract all that off, it means you're getting the gun for around $2500. A steal.

I'm going for that deal but replacing the scope with a Nightforce 5.5-22 NXS and Badger rings.

I had a 99 and ended up selling it for an 82A1. Agreed, the 82 is one hell of a gun. But it should be for what it costs. The 99 was a great gun also though, if I wanted to back into a single shot 50 again...would most definitely get another one.

I thought about one as well, but there is no range within 100 miles of me where I could even fire a single shot.

You may want to look at .338 Lapua instead, as far as I know you can still shoot them at the ranges around here.

Don't wanna hijack this thread but...

I looked at the McMillan rifles - very interesting.

What kind of recoil does one of those things have? Having fired both an M2 and an M80 (tank commander's .50 on an M-60 tank) I can categorically and emphatically state that I wouldn't want to put a .50 up to my shoulder and pull the trigger unless there was some special recoil absorbing thing done to it.

Do the .50's being discussed here fire the same .50 caliber cartridge as say the M2? In other words a military 50?

From what I saw it looks like the McMillans would be excellent for shooting targets at 1000 yds or more. True???

Yes, they shoot the same .50BMG cartridge as the M2.

I've shot an AR-50 some. It was less painful to shoot than my Benelli M1S90 with Magnum slugs. I attribute the disproportionately low recoil to heavy 30lb guns and very effective muzzle brakes.
