I have small arms, so I need a small but good rifle. Is the SKS shorter than the Mini-14? Are there any rifles you could recommend?

P.S Is there an CA-legal AR-15?

The FAB-10 is a California-legal AR-15. It's been remade (IINM specifically for the California market) with a fixed 10 round magazine. In order to reload the magazine, however, you have to break open the rifle (kinda like on a hinge). After reloading, you close it up and lock it back in place. Then you're ready to go. I assume that many accessories that fit the AR-15 also work for the FAB-10. Basically, it would be a gun you use at the range only, since reloading is slow. No personal experience with the FAB-10, but the AR-15 is very light and easy to shoot.

If you are thinking SKS and want something smaller and/or lighter, try to track down a "paratrooper" model SKS. They come with a shorter barrel, so they are a little lighter and IMO balance better. Russian paratroopers are more expensive but nicer than the Chinese ones.

I've never handled a stock Mini-14 so can't really compare, but many shops in California carry the Mini-14 so it shouldn't be too difficult for you to at least shoulder it and see how it feels for you.

If you are only interested in semi-autos, another California-legal choice is the M1 carbine. Oh, and for rimfire the Ruger 10/22 is of course a popular one. HTH.

SKSs, especially Chinese versions, have a short stock pull and may be a good fit for you. Most stocks can be sized to fit you, but the AR-15 type may be problematic that way as the collapsible stocks are a no-no.

If we are talking about FAB10...

You can put a collapsible stock on a FAB-10. This is because it does not accept a detachable megazine.

I'm not sure how short you want, but an AR carbine with an "entry" type stock is real short. I'm sure you could assemble something like this on a Cali legal lower.

Like this one from Rock River

I'm not sure what a Cali.-legal AR will cost you, but I'm sending my Mini 14 to get the barrel cut to 16.5". Cost will be $85 after shipping.
It is just a personal preference as the Mini is already a short rifle, even with the stock 18.5" barrel.

A SKS is a much less expensive alternative, but I just the like the way a Mini 14 looks and feels.

Almost any rifle can be modified to fit you. Some are easier than others. The Steyr ProHunter and Scout both have removable spacers that allow you to adjust the length of pull to fit. ProHunters can be found for reasonable prices and are excellent weapons if my Dad's is a typical example.

Sounds like you're leaning toward a semi-auto with an intermediate round. In California that makes it tougher to get a good quality gun. What is the gun going to be used for? If you're target shooting a bolt action like the Steyrs or a even a break open like a Thompson Center or NEF might be a better option.

If you want it for home defense then that changes things quite a bit. Basicly every feature that makes a good defensive gun has been poo-pooed in the PRK. My recommendation to protect yourself and your gun rights would be to leave for friendlier terrirtory taking your tax dollars with you. Voting with your wallet works as well on the government as it does on the corporations. If they drive out taxpayers with policy then they have to think twice about their unconstituional and draconian laws.
