i want a rifle for $300, help please!

If you want to defend yourself and your loved ones, besides a Saiga nothing else is really in your price range. Look at it this way, if you want a centerfire rifle for home defense(semi auto I'm assuming) spend at least twice your budget on something you can depend on.

I'm not you, but I don't think I would use an SKS for HD. I think its the fixed magazine that does it, not that I would need 10 rounds, but 27 and a detachable magazine sounds a lot better.

Besides a Saiga, the only realistic option would be a shotgun. You can pick up a used Remington 870 for $250 in good condition.

Maybe I'm thinking closed minded, but I seriously think of a semi automatic rifle around $300 besides a Saiga. ...

Keep in mind if you get a Saiga you will not be able to legally use high capacity magazines unless you swap parts out to be 922r complaint. That will run your cost up.
