I am thinking I want to get an AR15.

I have kicked around the idea for a while., but given the election results and stuff I hear about possible future gun bans, it might be time to get one before I cant buy one legally anymore.

I dont know much about them, other than that they are highly customizable with accesories.

I would like to talk about brands, caliber, accesories, costs, places to buy them.......etc........

Please offer any ideas, advice, and suggestions here. thank you!

you need to get way more specific on what you need/desire in an AR..actually nevermind, just buy whatever you can find at this point.;)

I got a Bushmaster 16'' Patrolman's Carbine A3, which is the most popular format for an AR, about a year and a half ago, and I love it. I paid $849 for it, which is phenomenal now. I believe they go for over $1000 now, where I live. Bushmaster is a great company, but for the price now, I wouldn't buy one, unless someone else is offering to sell it at a reasonable price.

Rock River Arms seems to be the best deal for the money right now. They are more like a custom production company. The fit and finish is better than Bushmaster and any other that I have seen. They come stock with a two stage match trigger. The Entry Tactical is an excellent choice.

My list in order of preference: Rock River Arms, Bushmaster or DPMS, S&W, Colt and LMT are way too much for what you get. Whatever you get, replace the extractor springs with the BCM extractor kit, and replace the green and black followers in aluminum mags with Magpul followers. Or get the PMAGs from Magpul. Those two things will GREATLY increase reliability.

woodfiend, I am curios as to where you came up with this information. i have been to plenty of gunstores, and more often than not, the price of the smiths are competative, if not identical, to the comparative bushmaster or rock river model. not sure where youre shopping, but a standard m&p 15 with carry handle goes from 900 to 1000, and from what I have experienced, that is a price that many gunstores charge for bushmasters or RRAs with carry handles. There are plenty of people who have gotten M&P 15 "Optics Ready" models in the 700-800 dollar range. For the extra testing and quality control that goes into the smiths, i would say there should be nothing to lose by choosing smith over the other brands for this reason alone. LMT will on average, run you 100-200 over the 1000 dollar range. colt will be more. Im just confused as to why people keep thinking that smiths are more money than comparative bushys, RRAs, etc. If the OP checks online distributors, he will see that the S&Ws do not cost much more, if any.

Might want to go talk to your gun dealer, and better do it quick. One of the two dealers in my area doesn't know when he'll get a large order of AR's in, and his guess is after the first of the year....

My other dealer, I spoke with earlier. He gave me his FFL to use when I find a lower I want to purchase, only if I could get through to the companies.

People are buying these things up left and right. Look on the internet for uppers....getting really hard to find nowadays....

i would agree that first prefs should be dpms, bushmaster, along with s&w and stag. i just dont see shelling out more for something that looks better on paper, only to be equaled or bested by rifles costing hundreds less.

and i would definitly go with 5.56/223 for your first ar.
