I am one of the unfortunate souls that bought a century arms polish tantal with a defective barrel, and I want to get it fixed. I have seen some bulgarian barrels around, but I'm not sure if those will fit the rifle or not. How should I proceed to turn this thing into a decent rifle?

I'm assuming Century is no willing to fix them? If not there are tons of great AK armorers out there that can put on a new barrel. I would call century first though. Where and when did you buy it?

I bought it at FBMG last June. I've heard from multiple people that Century won't do a thing about it.

Century used barrels with the wrong twist rate or interior diameter (don't recall the precise details) with the result that a lot of their Tantal builds keyhole a bunch.

I'd +1 the suggestion of calling/emailing some of the AK specialty shops and see what they'd charge to fix it. I think Jim Fuller/Rifle Dynamics are pretty reasonable for work. You could also look at A Piece of History (I think I've got the right name) who do some nice historically accurate kind of AK builds.

Sounds like you ended up with a 5.56 barrel instead of a 5.45 barrel.

I'm not really sure what the case is. It will shoot basketball sized groups at 70-80 yards. At 300 yards, I can't get within 10 feet of what I'm aiming at.

If I take it to a smith that knows AK's, will he know where to get a decent replacement barrel, or will i be expected to provide the parts he needs?
