I saw Classicarms has Polish Tantals:

The low price caught my eye first obviously. I have been window shopping for a Tantal and I originally saw Lancaster has them and/or Atlantic firearms (well they have Interarms and Lancaster):

These seem like well-built Tantals and the price is obviously higher.

I am getting the feeling Classicarms got these Tantals from Century. Can anyone confirm this? If this is the case, I am assuming it would be a Tantal possibly without a G2 trigger... and maybe without a chrome lined barrel? Should I expect a vicious trigger slap out of a Century rifle? Is it even worth it? Has anyone bought a Century Tantal?

Any AK-philes out there, chime in with your thoughts please. Thanks.

Yes Century is building a batch of Tantal folders they are cheaper builds & you may want to ask about the warranty also , we got 2 in our warehouse for testing and had to send both of the back .

i just bought one at a gun show the other day, have not had a chance to shoot it yet but what are the common problems with these rifles?

dont know if this will help you or not, but mine has century on the side of the receiver, and the trigger has TAPCOUSA G2 on the side of it.

Just curious as to what is considered a "cheaper" build?

And can you elaborate on what you mean by "had to send both of them back"?
Were they loaners and you had to send them back or did they blow up and kill someone--big difference in what that could mean. :^)

There seem to be a few cheaper AKs on the market right now, maybe not quite Arsenal standards, but a step up from WASRs and such. A good Tantal is a dream to shoot.

If you check out the pic on the classicarms site, the barrel and muzzle brake seem to be different colors. I'm just saying, $489 for a Tantal seems too good to be true. This isn't just going to be a beater to toss in the back of the pick up truck. :scrutiny:

Well, the kits were like $200-$250 (and I got a few for $150). A receiver (nodak, no less) is what, $70ish retail/shipped. G2 is $40. They have floorplates/followers available. They're standard rear and front trunnions, so nothing crazy about assembly. I can't imagine one without the chromelined barrel, and I've heard nothing about that (I don't think tantals came in with the mutilated barrels, like the .gov mandated chop job on the hungarian kits or the sewer pipes of the yugo). And a lot of the surplus 5.45 is mildly corrosive, iirc, so chromed would be pretty important to me in this caliber.

Just comes down to what is reasonable for assembly, then mark-up. Defintely on the low end, but not impossibly so. Of course, if it's being poorly assembly, improper rivet job, not headspaced, etc, it wouldn't be a good price at half that. :p

Is that like the old "Polish Target Pistol" you could buy in joke shops? Or this updated version, perhaps?

I have one of the tantals like in that Atlantic arms ad. The only problem I have is the magwell is just a tad slim and some mags don't fit. The steel mags and the bakelite mags fit and work fine. The Bulgarian mags that have sort of a softer plastic finish seem to be a little wider most don't fit.

I'd opt for the Intermatic Wz-88 tantal builds over anything that Century churns out. I'm quite the Tantal fan, but I'd rather do a kit build w/ the newer Beryl and Onyks accessories.
