I want to get a "CLASSIC" 30-06 hunting rifle with a nice wood stock.

If you are in no hurry, try a few gun shows. I see lots of classic rifles in 30-06 anddf have often referred friends who are looking for decent deer rifles. With your limit being higher than some of my friends, you would do very well indeed. As I looked at photos posted by others, I'm getting hungry to go shopping.

OP here:
I finally was able to find a Model 70 30-06 in stock. I can pick it up on Wednesday! I'm super excited.

I waffled hard between the 30-06 and 300 WSM (and 7mm Mag) but decided I needed an '06 before I bought any other rifle.

Cabelas had the Nikon Buckmaster BDC 3-9x40 on sale for $100 off (it costs only $129)! I was going to go with a Leopold but I have a standard Nikon Buckmaster on my 7mm-08 and it's much clearer than my Leopold VX-3.

I already load 30-06 for my Dad and brother with 180gr Nosler Accubonds so I decided to pick up 300 blemished bullets to test out in the Model 70. My plan is to (hopefully) find a load that shoots well in all 3 guns and use the same load for everyone.

As a bonus to all this: apparently the Model 70 is being made in the FN plant in South Carolina again. I am probably behind the times but I thought they had moved all the Model 70 production to Japan...
