I want to hunt hogs in (or near) Oregon

Ok so a buddy of mine from the southwest claims that hog hunts are some of the most fun one can have while hunting. Particularly done with a handgun.

When I have spoke with fish and wildlife guys or looked online the general answer I get is

"There are pockets of hogs in Oregon, but they are sparse, you wont find them on accident and the guys who know where they are dont want to tell because they want to hunt them"

While this seems reasonable to some extent I know how much damage these things due to farmland and crops so I have to think that somewhere in this state somebody has a bunch of hogs that they need gone.

How do I go about making those contacts, I live in the Portland area so I know I am going to have to go for a drive but I still think its going to be worth it.

If you are willing to drive, head to Northern Cal, there are a lot of hogs there, mostly private ranches though.

I was kind of hoping some one would speak up here cause I to would love to smoke down some loose pigs. And I am in portland so we could car pool. I am just not willing to drive to cali to kill some pigs and the thought of crossing the border with a gun scares me.

I've spent the last few years going to college here in Oregon and if I didn't learn anything else I learned that no one will tell you anything about where to hunt in this state.

In Alaska (where I grew up), I bagged a minimum of six black tail deer a year and had a lot of opportunity to hunt and trap many other critters. A lot of it wasn't with my father, all sorts of people were willing to let an interested young hunter tag along, join the hunt and help out.

In my experience, this is not the case in Oregon. No one will tell you a damn thing. I don't know how many times I've been told by old time hunters at the range how much fun they had shooting up jacks and sage rats: "My brother and I shot 300 in one day, yuk yuk."

Ask them about the specifics and same reply every time, "Just drive out into the high desert or Christmas Valley and knock on doors." Which I've done five or six times and at no small expense to hike around all over the place only to see three of four rats and a glimpse or two of some rabbits.

If I'm lucky then its, "here's a number, they charge 40-120 dollars a day, I've heard its good though." Thanks for the hot tip, I read about Predator Paradise on the internet. Calling up Fish and Game, oh my god what a waste of time. You'll never get an answer out of any of those folks.

I shoot pistol matches 2-3 times a month and most of the time I'm the youngest person their by 20 years. But I've heard the "there aren't enough young hunters anymore and the tradition is dying" whine a dozen or so times.

I'll tell you what though, I'm still looking hard. So if you fellows find anything out, send me a pm and I'll do likewise.

In the mean time I'm thinking about placing a classified ad in the newspaper: College hunter can't study chemistry all the time. Show me where the game is, I'll buy the gas/ammo/beer.

I can't wait to get back to Alaska.

I know how you feel. I shoot rats around burns but only because my old man lives there and knows some folks who have rats and don't charge money to shoot them.
Where do you shoot matches at? I shoot IPSC once and a while over in bend/millican.

Maybe drive to one of those areas and hit a coffee shop around 7am on a Saturday morning in a small town and ask some of the codgers what's up.

USMC - I regularly go to the Isaac Walton League range in Eugene and shoot the IDPA and speed steel matches there. I also shoot matches at Albany range (very nice facility) and occasionally drive up to Portland to shoot the practical rifle matches at the Tri-County range. Practical rifle is well worth doing, having a giant rock pit to shoot in makes the matches always interesting.

I don't think Oregon has many hogs. Central California has by far the most out on the west coast.
