Back in Oct or Nov I stopped at the Friends of the NRA table at a Sportsman's Warehous and plunked my hard earned 10 dollars down on a raffle ticket. Only300 being sold, so the odds were better than some raffles.

Right before Christmas, I got a call telling me I had won, and asking which gun I wanted. I didn't want the Rem 70 in .270, it was right handed. I already had a Ruger 357, so I chose the Rem 870 Wingmaster.

I picked it up today, and it is gorgeous. High gloss finish without a single blemish. Deep even blue. On the LH side of the receiver is the NRA logo, and the RH side is NRA in big block letters. I am impressed with the fit and finish of this shotgun. I don't know if Remington spends a little more effort on their NRA guns or not. If not, I may have to take a look at other Remington offerings.

After taking my first look, I was wavering on selling it. Once I put it together, I knew I wouldn't sell it.

So, I guess I have a new shotgun to hunt with this fall.

It is a great looking gun, with a 2 digit serial number. Kudos to Remington for making such a great looking shotgun for a great cause.

I hope I am off for the banquet in early March. I am sure there is another rifle or two with my name on them.

Wingmasters are nicer than Expresses.

Even though I don't particularly like 870s, I wouldn't dream of selling a Wingmaster.

Would this have been for Rocky mountain elk?

I too bought one of thos tickeks here in town ... didnt win tho

Sorry for the off-topic, but I'm curious... Why don't you care for the 870 Third Rail?

In my wanders of the interweb, opinions of the 870 have ranged from "good, solid gun" to "Designed by God Himself, and handed to Man on the slopes of Mt. Sinai."

As an 870 Wingmaster owner, but by no means an expert, I'm interested in knowning why you don't care for it...

I like the location of the controls on the Mossberg 500 series better; no more, no less. I think the 870 has earned its stellar reputation. I simply don't care for them. :)

This is still America. If you do not want to have an 870, you do not have to.

But, go shoot it. Note the balance, the fine way it points. Notice the way the clays are reduced to powder finer than pixie dust.Even better, get some dinner with it.

Then, look me right in the monitor and tell me again you do not care for it......

I "was" going to sell it.

Shoot it, then shoot it and then shoot it some more.:) After a few hundred rounds the controls will feel second nature.

I shoot trap with a 870 Competition Trap and it breaks the clays as good as guns costing 10 times it.

I have some arthritis in my left wrist and the opening and closing of the single barrel trap guns wear on me after a couple rounds. Sliding the action closed, as the gun is brought to the shoulder, has not caused any discomfort what-so-ever.

Shoot it and enjoy.

Dave McCracken, I have shot 870s; that's why I say I don't like the controls. Never said they don't function well, never said they don't point well.

I just don't care for them, even though they're fine machines. :)

Me too - they're prettier and parts are more available/cheaper! :D

None of that matters if I can't use the danged thing with ease, though.
