I was horded by mosquitoes while hunting

LOL, my fault for not preparing but luckily I did not suffer bites or welts as I had to make do with my tshirt to wrap my head serving as a bandana, only my eyes are exposed.

So I was thinking of getting those mosquito repellants , one those u have to rub or spray to skin and clothes. Whats a good brand that works ? I read the ones with DEET would cause some kind of allergic reaction or cancer ? How about the new thermacell. is this another wonder gadget ? Does this needs a battery or refill for the scent ? Expensive ?

How about just plain head net , ones used by US soldiers in combat ? No chemicals and no batteries needed. Safe and easy , right?
 
DEET has

a very good safety record.
Someone makes a slow release preparation of it that the Army uses.
They tested it in Alaska, the untreated volunteers got 1200 bites per hour.
Yikes.

Deet may work on mosquitos, but in my personal experience it is like a gourmet sauce for deer flies. Was on a fishing/float trip on the Kettle River in MN and a few miles before the takeout there was a deer fly hatch. My buddy and I downed almost an entire can of Deepwoods OFF with Deet and it didn't even phase them. They were actually biting us through out T-shirts. :eek: A couple of times we got out of the canoe and held our breath under water just to get away from them for a minute.

When we got to the takeout, we took our shirts off and it looked like someone had peppered us with bird shot.
 
I saw one mosquito here in deep East Texas take off with a cat squirrel.

I gripped my FAL tighter and held my breath. I couldn't help thinking: Would I be next?

But really, the mosquito is our state bird. I've found that wearing a mask, gloves, and anything that hides skin works better than any spray.
 
I don't know in Corrisicana those buggers were bitting me trough my shirt. A guy I ran into uses the thermocell he said is the best $20 he ever spent. I bought one and I am going to test it out this weekend so I will let you know how well it actually works. They do need refilled apparently and I haven't opened the package yet to find out about batteries but it must take 'em.
 
Oh yeah, those thermocells seem pretty neat. My dad was bragging about them last weekend.
 
Are those in Walmart hunting section or Academy ? (Referring to Thermocell )
 
When using DEET be aware it's the finest paint-remover around! A friend had spread some over his arms, and then drove his car with the window down. He leaned his arm out the open window, and removed the car's paint where his arm was resting.

I took off a little camo paint from my bow, too. Just a word of warning. Still, it works wonders for skeeters. A little dab'll do ya.
 
DEET has its' warnings for a good reason! It does not break down very fast and accumulates in the system until an overdosage can occur. Some bodys can absorb more of it but, all can be at risk if too much is used over a small period of time. Children are at high risk with this chemical because of their small body mass.

Bug suits can be had for <$50 and do a lot better job and are reuseable year after year.
 
I got mine at walmart thermocell that is. It was the last one but I think I have seen @ Academy
 
Had that problem muzzle season one year, nats were just as bad. The only thing I had was the doe pee, so poured it my hands and rubbed. Worked great, be advised it also works on wives.
 
I bought a Thermacell this year for bowhunting and this thing ranks in my opinion as one of the top items for early season hunting.

The smell doesnt seem to bother deer and it works. It kept them away. I didnt even have the buzz in the ear that you get when using spray before they get a whiff and fly off. They simply didnt come in at all.

I sat for 6.5 hrs and the original pad ran dry. Instead of replacing it i cut it off to see how good it worked. Within a few minutes i had them buzzing close again.

The only downside i could see would be in the wind but if its blowing pretty good the skeeters probably wouldnt be bad anyway.

Wal=mart here sells them. Id also advise getting the carrying pouch that you can buy seperately.
 
I can't remember what the stuff is called but you put it in when you wash your clothes and the stuff smells like candle wax. I used wore long sleeves and pants when fishing in ga and only got bit by no see um's on my hands. didn't get a single mosquito bite. My buddy was red on his arms from the bites. He wore a thermal shirt soaked in liquid benedryl to sleep that night.
 
Thermacell

I've used one in FL from archery through general gun. They work great for all bugs, not just mosqitoes. Be sure to use it at the skinning station, too.
No batteries are required. Each refill pack comes with a butane cartridge and three scent pads. I'd like to find another source for the butane cart's, because I've accumulated many extra scent pads. If you forget to turn one off, you burn all your gas without using the pads.
I usually fire it up in my tent before retiring, to drive the bugs out before I bed down.
Some of my friends won't use them because they think the deer can hear the burner. Think of an ultra-sonic dog whistle.
 
thermocell they sure work great, dont leave home with out one,
I used one In N/C for a early deer hunt, I didn t get one bite,not a one.and they sure were big bugs,along the out side of the range,
