Hey folks. In my area, fewer and fewer police officers are carrying tonfa style batons. They seem to be switching over to batons that fit in the small of their backs, long end up. I would say that calling these things batons would be a stretch, because they do not look to be impact weapons. I have not looked at one close up, but they look to be some sort of thin polymer sticks with two down curving crossguards that are not in line with one another.
So my questions are thus: does anyone know what I am talking about, what do you call these things, how are they used, how effective are they, and were they adopted to curb cries of police brutality?
I would think that the only use for one of these things would be as a parrying implement (ala main gauche), and possibly a restraint tool. The handle end looks like you might be able to get a good solid hit on something, but the long end looks to be flexible. (!) Perhaps I am just thinking inside the box, but they don't look like very effective batons to me.
So please tell me what you know.
