Basically a SMLE No1Mk3 but in 7.62NATO.
Is that why the magazine does not look like a .303 SMLE?

Also what is that thing on top of the upside down rifle, lined up with the rear of the magazine? A rear sight I assume but it does not look like a SMLE real notch sight, nor is it in the same position.

Lastly, doesn't the safety on a SMLE extend back from the back of the bolt assembly, above where the thumb of the firing hand wraps over the top of the stock?

I don't know, I'm just asking.

Yes.

Guides for stripper clips. The rear sight is in front of the receiver.

The safety is on the metal band on the grip area.

Oddly, it looks like both rear sights have been flipped forward for some reason.

The caption for the photo states:

"Indian security personnel wait to receive their quota of bullets before being deployed to Gaya, ahead of elections."

On another note... Now I'm in the mood for some roti with ghee, a big dish of Tandoori chicken, and a good curry! Man, I love Indian food! :D

They definitely look like SMLE's. Probably a Khyber Pass knock-off, hence why I can't figure out exactly what that magazine is.

Yum!

So they make a 7.62 NATO Enfield? Where can I get one?

They are definitely Ishapore 2A Enfields, not any sort of amateur knockoff. They used to be available from most of the surplus dealers really cheap. Those are gone now, but you can still find them for private sale. A quick search brought up a half dozen currently on gunbroker.

The magazine looks different because the rimless .308 doesn't require the curvature that the rimmed .303 does.

Some Enfields were also arsenal converted into .410 shotguns for riot control use, FWIW.

Back in the 90s they were something like $100 or less apiece at gun show prices. Haven't really paid attention to how common they are at gun shows these days.
