The above barrel is an 870 Marine Barrel, with rifle sights and Rem Choke. However the barrel ring is approximately 2.5" to short to fit the 870 Marine. It may fit the 870 MCS but they don't make a Marine Coat MCS. A normal 870 Marine barrel is mounted on the gun and you can see on the top barrel, the barrel in question, how short the barrel ring is.

Anyone aware of any 870 Marine ever made with a three shot tube? That is the only explanation other then the factory just screwed up. I am sending ten of these back and can not get an answer from anyone with Remington.

Did the 870 Special Field with the straight grip stock have a short magazine tube?

That is the only one I can think of that might, never heard of an 870 Marine having a short tube. Maybe the guy brazing/silver soldering barrel rings that day got nostalgic for the Special Field :).

Just my .02,
LeonCarr

The 870 special field did have a shorter magazine tube. But not certain how much shorter.

Just when you think you've seen everything.....maybe you can put 'em up for sale. There must be somebody out there who wants a slug barrel for their Special Field and don't care if it's Marine Coat.......;)

The Special Field had and the MCS still has a three shot tube. However, to my knowledge neither ever came in Marine Coat. I have no idea what this is or why this is. Of course I am not stuck with them as I have shipped all ten back for credit. I just don't like not knowing something and it appears no one at Remington will give me an answer. It is simple. If this was simply a mistake on the placement of the barrel ring then I will order more. If this was some special run then get them off the parts list or identify them. Remington just lost money also as they had to pay the shipping back to them. Sure want to know what this is.

Mossberg has nothing to do with this. These are Remington barrels that I purchased from Remington as I am a Remington Master Gun Shop and only buy factory parts. But I bet Mossberg is doing a better job with Quality control then the New Remington under Freedom Group is doing.

Just got an answer as to what this is and how I ended up with them. Thank goodness that I had some peoples e-mail that still care about the Remington name. The man answered my e-mail within a hour or so of sending it and was able to get to the bottom of it. I hope Remington knows they still have a few good people left. Here is part of his response:

This is, in fact, an incomplete MCS barrel. The rifled choke tube is included because the MCS system requires one for certain applications using sabot-encased slugs (our copper-solids do have some military applications).

That barrel was intended to receive our TriNyte finish, which starts as bare steel, is then nickel-plated (the state you received it in, as F403312), and finally PVD finished in a black or brown color. We make a version of the MCS with this finish exclusively for a specific customer that we are not at liberty to discuss. Any given part in our system will carry multiple different part numbers, as it travels through the various processes of becoming a finished “part”. This barrel, as F403312, is technically incomplete, as it would be finished in black or brown, and become another part number.

It is odd, and I was not aware, that we made the barrel, part way through the finishing process, available for sale as a “part”. I have already comm’d with the appropriate parties to get it blocked for future sale and have It removed from future parts lists.

Good work (although probably time consuming...) tracking down the slight errors that ended up with you on the receiving end of the wrong barrels... Now, I'm going to be thinking a bit as to just "who" or "what" the intended customer was for those...

As far as I'm concerned the more folks in any organization that have "input" on the way things are produced..... the more opportunities to end up as a consumer on the short end... Just another bit of the way things go in our super modern world...

I ordered an 1100 Steel Shot barrel a few yrs ago.
When I got the box it said "barrel DESIGNED by Remington".

It did not say "Manufactured by Remington".

It was perfect in fit, finish and function. Choketubes put in correctly. Unfortunately the anti glare of the rib was in a coarse pattern that did not match that of my old 1100 magnum's receiver. So the bbl went bye bye.

I eventually got a Remington manufactured bbl used.

Dunno who made the barrel I ordered of if whoever made it still does barrels for them.

Remington made a bunch of those barrels with the coarse cross rib hatching pattern. I got three Light/Target Contour barrels like that, and still have one. Well finished good shooting barrel, but I don't like that pattern. Hell on cleaning cloths.
