The questions are:
1. Which barrel(s) would I not miss if sold?
2. Are any of these a good candidate to cut to 20"?

The 3 RECEIVERS that I have are:
Sportsman 58 (blued)
870 Wingmaster (blued)
870 Express (matte finish)

Primary uses are defensive shotgun and hand-thrown clays.
I'm considering making an 8-shot pump gun and would need a 20" barrel for one of the 870s. (originally, I'd typed 1--shot, but Detonics' got me straightened out)
From what I've read, any of the barrels will work on the 870s. The other barrels can be drilled to work on the 58.

The BARRELS are:

Finish.Length...Rib..... FixedChoke...(870 only or drilled for model 58)...note
_________________________________________________________________
Blued....26.....VentRib....Skeet...(58 or 870)
Blued....28.....plain........Mod.....(58 or 870)
Blued....30.....VentRib*..Full......(58 or 870)
Blued....30.....plain........Full......( 870 only)
Matte...26.....VentRib....tube.....( 870 only)...can get other tubes as needed
Matte...18.5..plain........Cyl.......( 870 only)

(*the rib is wide (1/2") and was fitted to the barrel by Simmons Gun Specialtites/Kansas City/MO -- does this affect value if sold?)

I've never had a use for a 30" barrel and have 2 that sit in the closet. The plain 30" barrel came on the Wingmaster. Could it be shortened to 26" and threaded for chokes tubes to make it a more flexible gun?
Can either 30" barrel be cut to 20" and have a decent pattern, or is that a crap-shoot?

Thanks in advance for thoughts, experience, and expertise on this!!!

Unless you want the mag extension stick way out past the barrel you will need a longer barrel than 20 inches. A 26 inch barrel will fit with a 10 shot Choate extension about perfectly.

As for the rest I would have no use for the 28 inch and the 2 30's.

My 1100...26 inch barrel and 10 shot extension...

LOL--not what I had in mind. Let me re-calibrate and go with 8-shots for the 20-inch barrel. THANKS!

I'm not current on prices for Sportsman 58 barrels, but you might do a lot better selling those unmolested and buying what you want outright... barrels for discontinued shotguns often come at a premium.

Lee, Thanks. I'll check on that possibility before any bridges are burned.

A Simmons barrel alone is usually worth more than your three guns...combined - don't cut it

keep that and whatever length you THINK you need for HD

An 8 shot extension will require 20 1/2 inches minimum. Get the extension and us it to figure your barrel cut ( I would cut the 390 ich plain barrel). Leave enough to face the barrel.

Good info. I don't need it, but don't want to trash it. THANKS!

THAT makes sense. First-things-first. Kudos!

On Remingtons that I have seen, an 8+1 configuration means that the extended tube will match exactly with a 22" barrel.
