I was digging around through some old parts and found a heat shield that I'd like to identify. It looks similar to that used on the various US trench guns but this one is make to use the M-5 and M-6 bayonets as used on the Garand and M-14 rifles. I've searched and searched but so far all of the US trench guns that I've been able to identify all use the M-1917 bayonet. The M-1917 bayonet has a loop that fits over a male stud on the heat shield mount but this mount is "backwards" that it has a hole in the front of it and it fits the stud on the handguard of the M-5/6 bayonet. Other than the bayonet mount, this heat shield mount looks very much like that used on the model 97 trench gun. It has a trapezoidal shaped swinging wire sling swivel. The heat shield is spot welded to the mount and has four rows of twenty one ventilation holes and two pairs of dimples to hold the HS away from the barrel. Also the mount uses three socket head cap (aka Allen) screws to clamp it together. I don't know for certain about the older heat shields but I suspect the use of socket head screws is unusual. Due to the use of the SHC screws and fitted for an M-5 or M-6 bayonet I doubt that this is older than about 1953. Any ideas of what this is for would be welcome.

The 1897 Winchester used 2 different heat shields, the 4 row 19 hole shield appears to have been substituted for the 6 row 29 hole model from between December of 1941 to February 1942 to the end of production. The Stevens used a 6 row 29 hole heat shield as well. The Model 12 did use a 4 row hole pattern, unsure of the number of holes per row.

I searched out pictures and descriptions of the heat shields for the I-37, several models of Stevens, the Rem 870, the Win 97 and the Win 1200 Trench Guns but they all used the M-1917 bayonet. I think I also checked the Win m-12 but I'm not certain. I'll try to attach pictures with this reply.

That looks like Vietnam era Stevens 77E shield...the hex screws would not be original

I would start looking for a Stevens 77...they can be bought for 150...and use it to build up a replica trench gun for fun. If you decide to sell it I would say starting it at $200 would be about right...it is worth as much or more as the shotgun is.
