Idaho law enforcement campaigns against concealed weapons bill

BOISE -- Idaho law enforcement agents oppose a bill to allow people to carry concealed weapons such as loaded handguns inside their cars even if they don't have a concealed weapons permit.

Sergeant Dale Buttrey of the Nez Perce County Sheriff's Department says the plan could allow gang members to legally conceal firearms in their cars and leave officers who stop their vehicles with no way of knowing the occupant is armed.

Buttrey also objects to provisions that eliminate many concealed-weapon restrictions outside city limits.

The bill is being sponsored by lawmakers including Senator Gerry Sweet, a Meridian Republican and gun advocate.

His bill would also extend the duration of such permits to five years, from four, and increase the application fee to $15, from $12.

Gee, Sarge, I hate to be the one to break the news to you but officers who stop vehicles have no way of knowing whether the occupants are armed NOW!

In MT, I would guess that LEOs know that most vehicles have guns in them, since it is completely legal here with or without a permit. And concealed carry is ok without a permit outside of city limits.

Then again ... maybe the gangs in ID will move out into the sagebrush

It is odd how when the News says "law enforcement opposes CCW" or something similar they are almost allways refering to a police cheif or Sheriff. Why they don't ask the oppinions of the men walking the beat rather than the politicians who depent on appointment or elections to get/keep their jobs is beyond me.:banghead:

If cops want my respect, they'll stop donning uniforms before preaching anti-Second Amendment bigotry.

Friday, the Idaho Statesman had a piece in the paper. I wrote and submitted the following:

Let's see if I understand. Forty officers from the IFOP are against Senate Bill 1402 because they won't know if a gang member is carrying concealed or not? OK. And they don't think the gang members are concealing firearms in their cars now without the proper permits?

Crooks (which ostensibly include gang members) don't obey the law. By definition, that's what makes them crooks! Laws, such as this one, will affect only law abiding citizens. Crooks will ignore it. Such reasoning is nothing more than a red herring. What's their real objection?

As currently applied, the law reads that one must have a concealed permit inside city limits and "inside any mining, lumbering, logging or railroad camp..." [18-3302(9)]. Just how many of these camps are currently active in the state of Idaho? All the bill does here, is to update and modernize the code. The bill also extends the permit from the current 4 years to 5 years.

The crooks are already carrying concealed. Most of these crooks have one or more felony convictions which makes it a further felony to even touch a firearm, let alone carry one. Do we really think the crooks care?

The police in my little town are still rolling on the floor after reading that the "Big City" cops are afraid that gangbangers might be carrying!!
