RICHMOND

Gov. Timothy M. Kaine vetoed two bills that would have expanded gun rights to allow loaded weapons in car glove boxes and concealed weapons in restaurants.

Kaine, in a statement this morning, announced the vetoes of SB476 and SB436. The first bill would have let permitted people bring concealed handguns into restaurants – as long as they don’t drink while they’re there. The latter would have allowed people without concealed weapons permits to put handguns in a locked glove compartment or other interior compartment of a car. Current law in both cases requires the weapons to be visible.

Kaine was expected to veto both bills.

“Allowing concealed weapons into restaurants and bars that serve alcohol puts the public, the employees, and our public safety officers at risk,” Kaine said. “I take seriously the objections of law enforcement to this measure.”

The measure allowing concealed weapons in restaurants did not pass either chamber of the General Assembly with enough votes to override a veto. But the bill to allow weapons to be concealed in a vehicle did pass with wide enough margins to counter the governor’s action.

Looks like the first part of my prediction came true. Just waiting for the second: There will be an inability to over-ride the veto. In fact, fewer people will vote for the same bill this time around because they fear opposition.

But keep voting for people to fix the problems that were caused, in the first place, by voting people into positions of power with the ability to tax. Keep on believing it can happen, and it will!

the fight is NOT over, we can get this veto overidden but ONLY if you ACT. We snooze now and we LOSE!

And even if Sans Authoritas is right and we lose the override, that only means for this year. We make progress every time unless we give up so I'll skip the defeatist attitude and keep fighting.

Interestingly enough, the Mississippi State Troopers support our right, in Mississippi, to carry loaded in the car. I have been told so by the public affairs officer at the local Lions Club meeting.

My guess would be he didn't listen to anyone and is now trying to use cops as a scapegoat for his liberal idiocy.

I thought this was allowed anywhere due to a federal law that protects transportation of firearms across state lines.

Here is Georgia I have a loaded pistol locked in the glove box and I am pretty sure we recently had a rule change that we can have it in the console. Any place else in the cab it has to be in plain view and unloaded.

I guess I need to check up on that myself.

The federal law allows transport of an unloaded firearm in a locked container that is "not readily accessible" by the driver.

Trunks are okay, gloveboxes and other "passenger compartment" locations are not.

The Virginia law would have allowed the carry of a loaded weapon anywhere in the vehicle as long as that spot could be locked.
