Ideas for a guy who doesn't like bow hunting?

There are many compound bows that are not as clunky as bows made 10 years ago. I use a crossbow most days now due to my shoulder not always working but I also shoot my bow when I can. I have it set at 55# and practice at 25-30 yards max just because i don't devote enough time to practice and I don't want to take a chance at 50yds. The crossbow is just as clunky to me as my compound. Long bows and recurces may not have as many bells and whistles but they are about 27 feet long. I enjoy archery season and would do it all the time if I wasn't so darned lazy.

Another vote here for handgun hunting. You have a little more range than a bow in many instances, but it's still a far cry from a high powered rifle.

If you don't like bowhunting, don't do it..
Can't argue that.

Personally I am not a fan of bows in general.
Being a huge fan of 'bows in general", I'm glad there aren't more "bowfans" in my neck of the woods.
That week or three of "gun season" vrs four months of bow season.. well..

I guess if you like to hunt, the laws where you live have an awful lot to do with the tool you use.
In Ohio, bowhunters get the best of the deer season. In fact they get all of it. Bows can be used in all deer seasons.

Honestly, the only part I don't like is the clunky bow. I love everything else about it. I even like shooting the bow. I just don't like toting this big object around.

Well to me it wasn't necessarily the bow that was the issue, but all the other little extras. Where we hunt is mostly river bottoms and such, and at least one Thermocell is required equipment if usually not two. Throw in the range finder, a couple of bottles of water for the usual 80+ temps, and whatever other little, got to have trinkets, and well it adds up.

However, even with the quiver full of arrows, and added accessories, once set up and ready, I usually get an adrenalin rush when something comes into range, like I used to get when I was a kid. More times than not I am simply looking and not going to shoot, but none the less, it is a hoot.

The worst part is when the hogs come rolling by in waves. There have been several times when having 3-5 arrows was simply not enough. If I'm in a good location, I might, and have run out of arrows before the deer even have a chance to come by. I can't say I have ever had that issue while hunting with a rifle or handgun, as I usually carry at least enough for one full reload in my pocket.

Yup. You are a 'closet handgun hunter'. You just need to 'come out' and get with the program.

Get close, shoot carefully, know your equipment well AND know your capabilities.

I've used S&W in .45 Colt, Ruger .44 mag's, S&W .41 mag, TC in 30-30. All work very well and are an interesting, challenging, fun way to hunt.

Enjoy!

You could try a slingshot and a rock...Much less bulk/weight than either a bow or a pistol. Worked O.K.for David..might take some practice!

P.R.

A pistol?

I went from bolt action, to lever, to pistol, to bow. Next will be knife (just a joke about the knife)
A knife isn't out of the question. There are guys that still primitive hunt, like an insane joker I seen recently on a hunting show jumping off high creek banks down atop wild boar and driving a spear home in the process. That's a way to get really up close and personal with your quarry!

You can jump on the 10mm bandwagon with me. I've grown bored with picking deer off across the bean field with a rifle, I wasnt that good with a bow and the revolvers and T/C pistols they make today were just as capable as my lever gun so I bought a Glock G20 and am going to give that a shot this hunting season. I think open sights with an auto loader is gonna give me the new challenge I've been looking for and it also may be an option for you.

The sling shot is honestly an interesting idea. I've been thinking about getting one just to target shoot with. I'm not even sure it's at all legal though. It's interesting. I don't know enough about the idea though.

As far as closet handgun hunter that might be. I got this recently though:

I do see a recurve in my future though.

A spear is legal for deer in Alabama but i don't think a slingshot would be. We can handgun hunt during regular gun season so not a lot of people do it. Our BP season is a whopping 5 days the week before gun season begins so the incentive to go out and pay $500 for a BP rifle is low. I bought mine used for $100 to take advantage of that week.

Our BP season is off and on for a few weeks at a time (Mississippi), but we can use single shot rifles in calibers .35 or bigger. I have an inexpensive Handi Rifle in .45-70 that works well.

I am planning on breaking out with a real black powder rifle this season though. I have a Hawken Clone (T/C) I'm wanting to try out for fun.

dprice, those are neat options. I don't think the arrow firing gun will be legal for me though. :D
