Identify this Rifle -- I've never seen anything like it...

It looks like a Carcano or something like that which had the misfortune to come off on the wrong end of a drunken bit of plastic surgery.

The plan is to re-barrel to 7.62x39. I got the barrel off, and now am looking for a donor enfield barrel to turn down and re-thread to fit the carcano. From the reading I've done, this conversion has been done a few times, and the 303 chamber is close enough to the 7.62x39 towards the front of the chamber that it can just be faced off until it's the right dimensions for the 7.62.

We'll see how it all shakes out. It would be quite a neat little rifle in 7.62x39...I've always thought that would be a fun round in a bolt gun. :D

I have three 6.5 Carcano carbines, one is a parts gun, with an intact bolt...if you'd like it.
I don't know what the market is for them currently, but i'll undercut the competition... send me a PM if interested.

Hogan,

As Desi Dog said, he has a bolt for it. Call him up.

I'll be interested in how the project turns out.
I have a 6.5 of my own, sporterized but complete. Cost me $40. Haven't fired it yet but am looking forward, since I've heard good things about the 6.5 round.
Excellent loading design for the times, but I can't get it to feed reliably for the life of me.

I saw a couple very nice 7.35's for a decent price at the same show, but the round is hard to find and reloading materials are about as rare as hen's teeth.

A Mosin Nagant barrel will work well, and be cheaper and easier to find than an Enfield barrel. I would strongly recommend rechambering it, though.

Can the bolt face be open up enough to handle a 45/70 rim? If so that would make a very interesting project.
Enfields and Saminise (cis) Mauser have been converted to 45/70

The bolt face is already much smaller than the Mauser action...somewhere around .448 iirc. From what I've read, the .303 doesn't need to be rechambered.

There are 8mm mauser Carcanos too; however, they have an additional bolt in the stock for reinforcement. I think the common consensus is that the 8mm is a bit too much for the action, as far as i remember.

Have you thought about an AK barrel? you might be able to find one in the same price bracket as an Enfield barrel; that hasn't had a gas-port drilled yet.. I don't know the threads/dimensions, but i'd imagine that you could re-thread an AK barrel to fit.

here's an Enfield bbl:

probably too much loot for you though.

The Carcano has large threads, just over 1 inch in diameter. I have a feeling that the AK barrels are less than that at the chamber.

See page 3 for the Carcano and Enfield threading.

I have a lead on a barrel from a guy on another forum for 35+shipping, so that's way cheaper than either of those options. I'm all about cheap on this one, as I'm only in 50 bucks so far!
