I have a C&R license, my identity may have been stolen as I've been getting phone calls about car insurance with my information about cars I do not own, I have filed a fraud alert with a credit reporting company just in case, as far as I know none of my CCs or debit cards have been stolen or lost physically, but what do I do as far as my C&R license? Is there a way to alert the ATF or something? I'm just afraid someone may have access to that info using my identity and do something with it and it'll fall on me.

Likely not a big deal. I have gotten phone calls about cars I never owned. Seems someone with same name, same town does, they look up phone #s and robo call. Sometimes its just in same state.

I had one call (IIRC it was a magazine of some type) and they claimed they knew all info on wife. Winds up they were fishing, trying to get me to confirm info. (I still got new CCs) as they did have last 4 of number.

Without a copy of your license, what could someone do with your C&R information? I wouldn't worry about it too much. Even if someone used your license information, you would not be on the hook for anything. There are thousands of FFL copies floating around in the cyber world daily.

You probably want to put a credit freeze on the three credit reporting bureaus--generally a good idea. You will have to pay to temporarily unfreeze it but with a credit freeze, even with most of your information, it is impossible to really do much with it absent having your actual credit card numbers and info. If you are really paranoid, some credit card companies issue temporary numbers for the transaction only--know AMEX does it.

A good consumer reporter websight is the Clark Howard website--he runs a syndicated consumer advice radio show that plays in many markets. www.clarkhoward.com (it is free and no registration etc. required). Has all of the specifics on identity theft, fraud watches, and credit freezes. Only downside is it will keep you from signing up for credit offers on the spot from retailers and like. Usually to lift the freeze takes about 24 hrs or a bit less.

Had a bad guy get ahold of my drivers license once (I dropped it at a pizza place when opening my wallet) so I immediately moved to protect my accounts and institute a credit freeze. The police found it when they arrested the guy on other charges before he could do anything with it. If you can, also activate account warnings on your primary bank account regarding transaction amounts. No problems during the last several years so I guess it worked.

Home Depot and Verizon have both had large DATA breaches' in the last few weeks...:cuss: +1 on the credit checks and passwords'.

Why would you do anything with your C&R?

If you honestly think someone has made photocopies of your license, will forge your signature, and will camp out on your doorstep waiting to intercept UPS in order to buy old military surplus guns...I don't.

Identity theft generally wouldn't do anything with a C&R. When they do this they're generally interested in one thing: opening new lines of credit in the stolen identity's name so that they can withdraw as much money or make as many purchases as possible before everything gets locked down and they move on to the next person.

Generally, your EXISTING stuff is never touched - its all about new stuff and creating a mess that you'll have to clean up.

My suggestion personally is to put a freeze on your credit reports. Once that is in place they will give you a code that you will need in order to remove the freeze. Without those codes the reports can't be unlocked, and without them unlocked no one will issue new credit (if you need to make a large purchase you can remove the locks temporarily for a month or so). Once you have these codes I recommend printing and storing them - DO NOT keep an electronic copy in a computer. I keep all mine in a fireproof box with many other important documents.
