Hey all - just wanted to share my little bit of good news. :) Although I'm still ranked a marksman in CDP, I went from a classifier score (this past Feb) of 181 to 148 on this past weekends classifier match! My weak stage is of course Stage 3 of the classifier. If I can just make some better hits and not take so many points down on that stage, I'll be able to move up to sharpshooter for sure!

I have the opportunity to take Matt Burkett's class in July, but I'm a little hesitant because it seems that he focuses solely on the 'game' whereas I am really more concerned with being prepared for a real-life scenario. (I know, IDPA isn't 'real-life', but its good practice). So, any opinions out there? Would taking his course be worthwhile even though I'm not really all that concerned about ever becoming an expert or master?

Why would a Gamer be less able to deal with a real life shooting than a Tactical Martial Artist type?

Playing the game side will probably do more for your pure shooting ability than tactical training.

Don't believe me? Go to a match of your choice, be it IDPA or IPSC, and look at who places at the upper level. Is it the tactical ninja types, or the gamers? And then ask yourself the following question:

"In a real gun fight, why would the gamers (who win competitions) suddenly lose their skills and lose the gunfight, while the tactical types (who lose competitions) would suddenly have superior skills and win the gunfight?"

Thanks for the replies. I see both of your points and am re-thinking some things. After reviewing some more of Burkett's website I am actually leaning more towards taking the class than not at this point.

mpthole, thanks for your interest in my training. BTW, I have a money back guaruntee on all classes I teach. If you feel you didn't improve guess what? Its free! Of course we prove this on the clock and the targets and with over 4400 students trained world wide the average improvement ratio is around 34% speed-wise and a 50% reduction of group sizes.

BTW shooting in real life is very much the same to shooting in the games. Shooting is shooting, it is the application of tactics that is different and you are welcome to bring up any questions of that nature in class. I am sure the other students would like to hear that discussion too.

Give me a call if you get a chance. I am in for the next two days before the 3-gun Nationals. My cell is 602-790-8838.

Take care,

mpthole, Several months ago I had the opportunity to take a class from Todd Jarrett. It wasn't a tactics class, it was basically how to win in IDPA. It was the first real training I have had and it was a great class. Besides being one of the best shooters on the planet, Todd is a very good teacher. A couple of friends who were there had trained with others in more tactics oriented classes. Both said they improved their shooting ability and gained more knowledge from this class than any previous.

GeneS & all:

I spoke with Matt yesterday and signed up for the the class. Most of my training has been with a rifle although I've had some training with a pistol as well. I'm really looking forward to adding Matt's Speed Skills to my repretoire of courses.

Another cool thing about him coming to my home town is that he'll be staying to shoot in our IDPA match the day after the class.

Thanks Matt! Looking forward to seeing you in July. Good luck in Europe! :)

The IDPA Classidfier was the first match I ever shot. Boy, it is addicting. I just wish I had more time to play!
Congrats on the improvement!
