i would like to get into these comps and when i see them on like VS or some other cable newt work there shooting really fast and with little recoil , what caliber are they shooting ? i would like to do stock class bc its cheaper and its what i would carry if Ill had a carry law.

SO WHAT CALIBER? are most of these guys shooting? 9mm 40. 380?

production division mostly shoots 9mm.

limited and limited 10 were heavily focused on .40 S&W the last time i paid any attention, and the open guys are typically shooting .38 Super or similar.

In the non-compensated divisions, they low muzzle flip has more to do with how they are holding the gun, than the power levels.

IDPA is great fun. I shoot my M&Pc 9mm in the stock class. I've also shot my fullsize M&P 9mm, but prefer the compact --YMMV.

FYI, you can CC the compact and get X-grip sleeves for the full size mags to fit with a nice contour on the compact that feels better than the fullsize grip, IMO.

Because of ammo cost, I know a few folks who have parked their .45ACP and are now shooting 9mm for IDPA.

IDPA rules regarding power (energy) preclude .380ACP. The serious shooters, will have ammo downloaded to minimum power.

At the informal weekend matches, 9mm and .45ACP are the majority. A few revolvers and some other semi-auto calibers are the minority by far.

If you’re going "stock" and shooting factory ammo then 9mm is the way to go. Recoil is nice and ammo fairly cheap, relatively anyway. Like Owen said, the low muzzle flip has much more to do with the shooters grip than the caliber they are shooting. David is right, if you are looking for a 5” Smith&Wesson then the Pro or L series are the way to go. I shoot the Pro in IDPA and love it.

i mentioned the S&W BC i liked the way it looked haven't held it yet, but ill get to it some time, if i were to get it what class would i be in>? bc its not a single stack , an can i take an put some fiber optics sights on it instead of a black front post for better sight acquisition an still be in factory class? were can i read the rules on what type of gun can i use

The S&W M&P 9mm pistols are classed as Stock Service Pistol (SSP) for IDPA. The L comes with standard 3-dot sights. The Pro comes with Novak sights that have FO in front and black rear. Either style of sights are fine. For USPSA, either will fit nicely in Production class.
