If I have a SBR and go overseas for a year, What do I do with the rifle? I doubt I can take it with me. Can I leave it with a relative? Probably not. What are the legal issues I need to contend with.

Do you have it in a trust or in your own name? A trust could be a good solution.

Could you leave it in a safety deposit box?
Or locked in a case at a friends home? If the box is locked and they have no key they won't have access.

The weapon, if individually owned- not by a trust or LLC, must be stored in a way that no one has access to it, other than those names on the Form 1 or Form 4. A safe that only you have the combination to, would be an example.

I used a storage locker in the past. The one I used was lit, gated, and under video surveillance 24/7.

Thanks everyone for the information. I have a safe with a key. My wife is the only other person with a key. From what I understand from this thread, I could leave the safe with a relative, lock the sbr in the safe, and take the key with me and would be OK with the BATF.

The other option is to put my relative on the trust or the LLC. Is this correct?

Yes, but the relative would be under the same rules as you: they would have to make sure that nobody else could access the gun.

Lock it in a safe, take the key with you.
