Okay, i can finally afford the M1A I've always wanted. A quick web search on milsurp .308 reveals high prices and short supply. Not a big deal, but...
Maybe I should use that money and stock up on ammo for my other milsurp caliber rifles instead.

Ha, I've been pondering the ammo thing myself. I finally decided I shouldn't worry too much about ammo and get the gun I've wanted for so long while I'll have the money to. Get your M1A. That ammo isn't going anywhere.

That's what they said about GP11. Used to be $20 for 70 rounds, remember... ?

What good's a gun if you can't afford to shoot it? (The GyroJet effect)

Dunno what a GP11 is, so no, I don't remember. There's a reason I haven't gotten into mil surps that shoot calibers that aren't used in modern guns. Eventually the ammo is gonna dry up and you're gonna have a gun you can't shoot. So you tell me, what good's a gun you can't shoot? So what if you can't shoot it as often as you like.....just means you'll enjoy it that much more when you do shoot it.

Springfield or Fulton?

What M1A will you get? I choose a Springfield. I shoot Winchester .308 147 grain, the recommended load, and it's on sale at www.midwayusa.com until the end of the month for only $99 for 200 rounds. I also shoot the federal 150 & 165 grain for hunting.

I'd get the M1A as they aren't getting any cheaper. Ammo will be eventually available again. What model are you planning on getting? Are you going to start shooting competitively or just target shoot?

loki.fish: GP11 = 7.5x55 swiss

Don't worry so much about the current availability of .308/7.62x51 ammo. The M1A/M-14 rifle is a good one and it is my opinion that everyone should own at least a semi-auto (since present-day ATF types don't allow full-auto) rifle chambered in .308, .308 so that it can also safely shoot lower-pressure 7.62x51 NATO rounds.

There're two wars going on, one in Iraq, another in Afghanistan. Don't be suprised that ammo is a little sparse for the moment. When you see a good deal on good ammo (such as ammoman's Lake City .308), buy it in bulk since the stuff doesn't spoil. That way, you'll have some in times of want, such as the current day. :)

weedwhacker- You can still legally buy full auto in most states. The atf regulates it but it is not a "can't" issue. The costs are high but it can and is legally done.

Very true. I should have clarified, but I doubt folks consider a $10-20,000 firearm to be a realistic alternative. New ones are "illegal", according to the BATFE, and they have all the guns and armored vehicles, so I just nod my head in mock agreement for now.

-edit
Those circumstances you speak of (in post below), being an SOT and able to "possess" an automatic firearm, are very narrow. In general, a new full-auto can only be made contingent on BATFE approval, and the only circumstance which approval will be granted, as far as I am aware, is with a request letter from a law enforcement agency.
I am a bit fuzzier on the remaining details, such as whether or not the newly-made full-auto firearm must then be destroyed after the demo, or if it can be kept by the SOT until he is no longer an SOT, and/or if it can be tranferred to another SOT before the original SOT loses his SOT.
It's all a bunch of BS anyhow, since the net effect is to deny the utterly vast majority of We, the People, certain types of firearms - i.e., they are effectively banned.

weedwhacker- yet again misinformation. New ones are not illegal... they may be restricted to class 2 and LE but they are not across the board banned. As a normal civi you may not own one unless you are able to own dealer samples or are a manufacturer but again you can go through the expense and permits and aquire them in certain circumstances. I am not trying to pick on you but there is enough confusion when it comes to class three stuff that its not even funny. The cost to play while restricting most does not preclude all from doing so. To spead info as you are just gives the uninformed the ability to keep spreading falsehoods. The NFA world is not nearly as scary as most normal folks are led to believe.
