Just for fun.

If James Bond were an american what (instead if his PPK) would he carry and why?

I'm going to go with a S&W 442. So tiny, very american, nice and classy black. It has the built in laser too, for that technical edge and to pick off bad guys at 100 yards. And because he is James Bond he can probably get 10-12 shots out of this gun before having to reload. :D

Anyone else? :D

Whatever he damned well pleased because this is AMERICA and no desk-bound paper pusher is gonna tell HIM what to do when his butt is on the line <grin>.

An American James Bond wouldn't carry anything chambered in a caliber that didn't start with a '4'.

I'm thinking at least an officer's model 1911, or a snubby M57 Smith. It doesn't really matter how big it is, Q can make a holster that will conceal it.

He'd probably have two guns, one for deep concealment and one for times when concealment wasn't the utmost on his mind. It's what he did in the books. Actually, in the book Dr. No, he took his S&W .38 SPC to the island instead of his PPK (both just issued to him).

I'd say he'd go with something like a Glock. It's used by so many. He wouldn't want a gun which will immediately notify someone that he's secret service like the PPK did in so many of the movies.

There's two schools of thought.

If he's a red blooded American killer, he'd pack a 45 and sneer at effete European bureaucrats.

If he's just a killer, he's carrying whatever he took off the last guy that got in his way, because there are no dangerous weapons - only dangerous men.

In the spy world, don't you think most "secret agents" would use something that was sterile and/or unrelated (in this case non-American), so as not to be traceable back to his/her country of origin? If that were the case, I think a CIA agent would be using something European and in 9mm. Maybe an H&K P2000SK, a Glock Model 26, or a SIG P239.

Late addition (and quite fitting too): Walther PPS

if he where british but working for america in america he would still carry a walther but if he where full blooded american then he would carry a glock as this seems to be the most popular compact hand gun out there

I'm sure if you call a couple of CIA agents and asked them what they carried most back "in the day", it would be an overwhelming majority of snub-nosed .38 Special revolvers, either Smith and Wessons or Colts. In fact if you read the books when Bond encounters an American operative of any sort, they are usually carrying a 5 or 6 shot snub.

Actually, if you read about CIA agents in the 1950s through 1990s many carried snubs in .38 and/or .357 magnum.

Something spiffy like a Para Warthog, or elegant and simplistic like a Kahr. I could see Daniel Craig carrying something special like the FN 5.7 so he could slap in a huge magazine and lay waste to lotsa badguys...

Depends on who ran the American equivalent of MI-6.
If it were a Northern Republican: Here's your issue Beretta M-9 and standard 9MM ball. Practice with it, don't worry we got a deal on the gun and ammo.
If it were a Democrat: There would be "Welcome" and "we're sorry for this" yellow cards printed up in every language. He'd have to call for authorization to use his Super Soaker pistol and have to spend 3 weeks being debriefed for violating the (Non-American) scumbag's rights.
If it were a Southern Republican: You can have anything you want, as long as it's a 1911 in .45 ACP.
