If only more people carried concealed this could be avoided

I think the "to avoid becoming a robbery target" was just an ignorant journalist mistake because later in the story it sounds like his commanders were basically saying don't carry what you don't want to lose (a pocket full of cash). He likely didn't expect it to turn out the way it did.
"They took it, turned his pockets inside out, took what he had and told him since he was a Marine and didn't have any money he didn't deserve to live. They put the gun to his neck and shot him,"
So criminals are making anti-military political statements now?
you should be executed QUICKLY (not after decades of appeals), very painfully, and publicly
I don't know why, after causing untold levels of pain and suffering to their victims, the worst criminals are (eventually, if ever) put to sleep in the most painless and "humane" manner possible. Although "brutal", they did it better in the dark ages.

That was uncalled for, Tyris. There is already a thread for this kind of discussion, and feel free to insult China all you want through private messaging.

However, polluting another member's thread is not necessary.

Harsh sentences nor more guns will make all of this go away. We need to put God back into the classroom and see if there isn't a way to reduce the divorce rate. Too many kids raised by one or less parent without knowing God will be the end of civilization as we know it.

You hit the nail right on the head there with that statement. What the liberals don't understand, and they keep beating around the bush, blaming other things for the upsurge of criminality while the real cause is right there and obvious.

Kids as young as 4 nowadays are already learning to hate others, use cuss words, and they always seem to happen more frequently in disturbed families that see a lot of domestic violence, divorces, etc...

More guns will help too. I hope there will be a national Right To Carry Law that will be effective in every state and city, no matter what the local lawmakers say.

So much for the “give them what they want and you won’t be hurt” line from the anti-gun crowd.

Same could be said for carying a gun. Some folks would beleive you are less of a target for having a gun. NOT TRUE you are still the same target to the BG if they dont know you have a gun. A gun is just a tool for SD personal awareness is the best thing you can have for SD. You see things and get a feeling, its time to leave. Its when you dont see things and get a feeling or you cant leave, thats when you need the gun.

Totally agree. I have and will continue to preach that carrying a gun is not in any way, shape, or form a guarantee of increased safety. I feel quite strongly that situational awareness will get you much, much further in the survival game than will carrying a weapon. Of course, the optimal combination is both together.

The final analysis is that there are a multitude of things we can put in our self-defense toolbox. And this toolbox is just like a real one- you might be able to do a whole lot of home repairs with just a hammer, but you could do them a lot more effectively if you had a set of wrenches, screwdrivers, and other stuff. It's important to have ALL of the right tools available, so you can choose the combination of tools best matched to a situation.

It boils down to this: If you buy a pistol, get a carry permit, start going about armed, and call yourself prepared for self-defense, you're comparable to a man walking around with an adjustable wrench and calling himself a mechanic.

You don't need God or religion to teach morality. You need to teach children to respect the rights to others and that there are real and tangible penalties for not doing so from a stout spanking to spend some time cooling your heels in greybar hotel.

I don't break the law for fear of God, I do it out of respect for my fellow man and acknowledgment of the price I will pay if I do.

Also if we're going to put God in the classroom then whose god will it be?

I say let them lose on a marine base... live fire exercise...

I personally beleave that if you kill some one during violent crime, death should be the only punishment. Give them a year for appeals and the like, then shoot them.

My state is completely backwards on this..
is there anyway to get your local politicians to consider conceal carry for the state of Illinois?

I only wish Americans would get this upset at all crimes. Undoubtedly, these thugs have a long criminal record. If I were the family I would sue the hell out of anyone involved in their previous prosecution and subsequent release.
Someone along the line convinced this fellow that the less he had to offer, the less likely target he would become. Someone also convinced the thugs that they had a right or responsibility to punish this man after he was found to be a government employee, and therefore was guilty of a capital crime. These are the consequences of the intrusion of simple-minded ideologies that we are allowing to affect our society legislative process.
This man was trained to seek and disable any threat to his countrymen, and aid any person who seeks it. Although our soldiers are sometimes unsuccessful, we know that they die with heroic dignity. By our own liberal brainwashing, we relegated this man to begging his assailants and bartering his military service as justification for his own life, as if he thought they had the capacity to understand that they owed it to him. I would personally rather die fighting than begging. The way to deal with crime is the same way we deal with foreign enemies that threaten us: Make the retaliation of an attack on us FAR outweigh any potential gain. "Cruel and unusual" is relative, so let's raise the punishment standards. Why the hell did a case involving lethal injection as cruel and unusual have to go to the Supreme Court?
By the way, Concealed Carry is just do-it-yourself security. Just like any other DIY project, some people are capable of more than others. The most important thing in life is knowing your limits and not getting into something you know you can't handle. Home mechanics are injured and killed everyday by falling cars and defective brake jobs; criminals use tire irons and screwdrivers to break in; and anybody with a car is capable of killing one or several people with the jerk of the wrist. We don't outlaw tools and jacks because we trust that most people know what they can do. We don't limit the types of cars civilians can own, yet we walk down the sidewalk without worrying about deranged drivers wiping out pedestrians.
Similar arguments can be made with other DIY projects and equipment used therein, involved in criminal acts or generally misused; such as lawn mowers, power tools, fire extinguishers, moving vans, spray paint, cameras and surveillance equipment, computers & copiers, plumbing parts, gardening supplies...
When I carry a concealed weapon I have the option to not use it if I feel the situation would be safer without. I don't advocate the banning, or the licensing of fire extinguishers because someone might "try to be a hero" and kill himself attempting to put out a fuel tanker fire, or use it to whack a victim over the head.
God help us all,
Madison

When we construct a system where only the government can be trusted to make decisions, who are we as dumb civilians to question them when we feel they are abusing us? After all, we chose them to lead because they are better than us.

I've just got two items to point out:

1. The purpose behind not carrying a "pocketful of cash" is simply this - most of the time, young guys out on the town with a lot of cash can't help but display it. Even if they're just buying a pack of smokes, others have the chance to see a full wallet. Anyone seeing that full wallet has the potential to either be a criminal, or report the fact to a criminal, setting the young man up for a robbery. Not carrying a lot of cash takes that threat away. It obviously didn't work in this case.

2. For BattleChimp Potemkin... yeah, I agree with you that we should be equally appalled at all crime, no matter who the target is. Speaking just for myself, though... I just don't have the words to express the contempt I feel for the human waste outlined in this story. It wouldn't bother me so much if the robbery victim was a crack dealer, or pimp, or somesuch. The majority of my anger stems from the fact that the victim was a man that had already overcome so many disadvantages - he was raised up struggling, worked hard to work his way out from them, and had set for himself the foundation for an honest, productive life. His being a Marine was the cornerstone of that foundation.

It angers me that a man of so much potential was taken. Maybe it's just me, but his service to our country is just one indicator of how much we lost, when we lost that one man. Strangely enough, if he had been born with a silver spoon in his mouth, and hadn't had to overcome so much in his youth, I would be less upset at his fate. Again, maybe it's just me...
