I've had varied responses as well. I just haven't had that many negative responses. I realize that there are die hard anti's out there who's opinions I'll never change, but the same holds true. They won't change my mind. I just tell them "Hey, after you or someone you know gets victimized come to me, I'll still point you in the right direction. No hard feelings." ((Yes its sad that I say that, but in my opinion its sadder that people don't want to get involved with guns until they or someone they know get victimized.))
At first my family disagreed with me, there never being guns in my home growing up. But after a little while they came to me when they showed interest in buying home defense weapons.
I've converted my share of anti's. I don't take a active role in this though. You can't change people unless they want to change. I just let my anti's friends know that I carry and have my reasons. If it ever gets to be an issue I usually tell them that I'll give up my guns when all the badguys do also.
Usually I just wait until they show interest and its always soemthing to the degree of "I've been thinking about getting a gun.". To which I only have one question. "Why?" I answer any of thier questions and/or direct them where they can get the answers. If they are interested enough I even offer to take them out to a range.
There are people that have known me for years and not known I carried. One of my favorite questions (almost always asked when they find out I carry) is "How long have you carried?" I love the look on thier faces when I slightly reveal (I just knock on my weapon) and say "Every single day you've known me."
I have gotten flak over carrying though. A good friend of mine's Girlfriend (well now wife) used to have a problem with me carrying in her ("thier") home when she found out. So for about half a year I simply didn't go to thier house. After Katrina and the crime rate rising they have come to me to ask about getting thier own guns.
