If only ONE rifle for all uses, I'd have an Alexander Arms 6.5 Grendel AR-15, 18.5" barrel, as shown on www.competitionshootingsports.com in their Grendel shop.
The Grendel is the closest we've ever come to a true all-purpose round for the AR-15; you can shoot flat to 1000 meters, or can kill whitetail or mulies using a 140grain hunting bullet, out to 500 yards with confidence.
Yesterday, the Grendel was at Blackwater, attending what was supposed to have been a 'shoot-out' with the Barrett 6.8 SPC. After the Grendel defeated armored glass (in the same test in which the Alexander Arms Beowulf was the only contestant to punch through) the Barrett folks wouldn't even make the attempt. Then, twenty shooters fired 10-shot groups at 500 meters with the Grendel. Again, the Barrett folks declined.
Some shootout! Anyway, the Grendel firss the same .264 bullets my dad always loved for deer and coyote hunting. He made some incredible shots out to 450-500 yards with his Model 70. I can do the same now, at 50% longer distances, with an AR-15. AWESOME.
