If you could use only one...

If you could use only one choke for your 12 gauge, which one would you choose?

Think of a practical do all choke capable for everything from targets, to clays, to ducks, to turkeys, possibly geese (but unlikely).

I had a fixed full barrel opened up to 12 poc (right between ic and lm).

For my uses, it works very well.

Tightest choke you can shoot steel in ( Ducks or Geese is Modified ) ...and you need a Full choke for Turkey....so what you're suggesting is not practical.

For me, this is simple, because all I use a shotgun for hunting, is pheasant, chukar and quail. IC is perfect. My first barrel has the IC choke tube, and the second barrel has a M choke tube. Never needed the second barrel. . If I were going with a fixed choke, it would be IC.

I followed detailed instructions from Dave McCracken on patterning and application and for my purposes, I C with Remington 00 works best.

Yep, Cylinder hasn't failed me yet.

Federal's FliteControl wad comes in most any shot size I'd ever use anyway.

Improved Modified, because in my experience it actually patterns larger shot better/tighter than Full. You can always wait for them to get farther away, but the reverse is not true.

I grew up using an old Ithaca 37 with a fixed full choke. I used to blame the constriction for misses, but over the years I learned how to shoot it. Now I very rarely change choke tubes. I just like using full.

I hunted everything in Kansas with an Imp Cyl Browning A5 for about 50 years.

It didn't work so good on long range ducks and geese with lead shot and paper wad shells.
But plastic shot cups added a degree of choke.
Buffered and hard shot added another degree when those came along.

But the IC came into it's own again for ducks over decoys after steel shot became law.

IMO: More people miss more upland birds like pheasant and quail, or pass shooting ducks over decoys with Mod & Full choke.

Or else they don't miss and completely ruin the eating meat part with too much choke + modern shells.

No waterfowl for me so my one choke would be Mod and I'd control my patterns with different loads.

Full, b/c it's all I've ever used and I know how my shotgun works.

Imp. Cylinder because the center of a pattern pretty well stays the same. Larger shot will tend to stay centered longer too so you increase your effective pattern distance by going up in shot size. You do lose more pattern density with a more open choke but the shot string pretty well stays the same in the center so if you are an accurate shot you will be more versatile with a more open choke.

It would be modified for me as well! The only turkey I've ever taken with a shotgun while actually turkey hunting was taken with a fixed modified Rem.1100 with 2 3/4 " #6 high brass! Turkeys didnt know they couldnt be killed with such inferior equipment back then! It also works on doves and ducks quite well too!

For upland hunting, trap, and sporting clays, I will now stick with IC. I tried it for the first time a couple weeks ago with sporting clays and hit twice as many as I have in the past when shooting with my 12 gauge 870 and the modifed choke tube.
