Evidently trapping and pepper spray are the best these people can come up with. After all, who would want to kill a cute, cuddly, rabies-spreading fuzzball?

I vote for a suppressed .22mag, a night scope, and a couple cans of tuna. Alternatively, round up a dozen 12 year old Okies, supply a few boxes of .22, and all the ham sandwiches they can eat. $2 a head sound fair? Any other ideas? I don't want to sound too much like a "what gun" thread. I'm actually curious about how you guys would deal with raccoon infestation on a large scale.

You can't suppress a .22 Mag -- it has a muzzle velocity nearly twice the speed of sound. Standard velocity .22 Long Rifles, which are subsonic, can be suppressed.

Dang. I wanted something with a little more punch than a .22lr, but noise is a concern with smart little critters. Maybe a heavy .22lr?

Too urban a location for guns....

So we have to switch the thread to, oh, maybe swords or the 6-foot pole-arms of the medieval days. Or boar spears.

Ninjas chasing raccoons? The amazonian guy with the blowgun, from the beer commercials? We haven't seen the last of this story.

When I was in highschool some animal found one of our cats that had just had a litter of kittens........... it took me a long time to clean out that shed. We had racoons all over that place, I am pretty sure that is what did it. Absolutely brutal. The mother was never the same cat afterwards.

Back to the subject on hand: Firsthand experience has told me that 22lr is a bit light to quickly kill a racoon. And with a shotgun you had better be pretty close. They are tough little buggers.

I recall somebody posted somewhere on here something about emptying a full 10/22 into a raccoon and winding up killing it with a .45 pistol.

Racoons (and other animals I might need to hunt down in an urban environment) is why I have a bow. However, if the animal is in the process of attacking someone, or one of my cats, I will be using the nearest firearm. Once, I was trapped in my garage by a stray dog (barking and growling at me from the door). I will not allow that to happen again.

I know this is a little off topic, we had a sick possium hanging around, woulnt move, would just hiss and smile at you if you were anywhere around it (like 35 ft away). Went outside after about 10 min of this with tme Marlin Mod 60, emptied it into the head of the possium,(the last few rounds the muzzle was about touching the possiums head) & had to come back to get the 12ga.

Hey Red, did you notice if the mother cat had defensive wounds? Mothers usually put up a pretty furious fight when there young are in danger.

A magnum air rifle or a .22 with Aguila Colibrei would do the trick, and not too much noise.

Any 45 ACP carbine would do the tick; plenty of punch and easy to supress. I would say to remove any food sources that would attract them, however these particular raccoons have learned that humans provide food (whether processed or in the form of raw cat). At this point they wan't to hang out near people, so trapping and relocating or killing them are the only two viable options.

Night vision/IR, and a good AR-15, with a Glock 21 or a 1911 for backup. Suppressors optional ;)

I lived in the Olympia area from '97-'99 (Boston Harbor). We had a racoon family in the area that was absolutely fearless. I remember BBQ-ing a salmon on my back porch and seeing those beady eyes staring back from the branches of the nearest tree (it gets dark early in the winter). I'm not sure they waited until the grill was cool before going after the crisped skin...

.22 lr

.22 Lr is more than enough for Raccoon, When I was growing up, the .22 short cartridge is all we ever used to hunt coon with. All it takes is a single bullet to the head. As for dumping 10 rounds into one with a 10/22 and not killing it, I wouldn't be blaming the rifle or the cartridge.

The first thing that came to my mind was a pellet gun. Then I figured you should at least have a little fun with it and get a bow with some arrows.

A good heavy .22LR (I like CCI's subsonics) will do the damage and let the fellow get away to bleed out somewhere that doesn't require my using a shovel.

Buzzards and possums gotta eat, too.

+1 on the possum

had one in the back yard acting anti-social. Fetched the 22 pistol and put 10:what: rounds in its head before the sucker went down for good. that is one tough critter that used evolution to the max!

12 gauge with a nice long barrel. :)

Hope you were joking there. Anything deserves a better death than that. :scrutiny:

well, educate us then!

Tokugawa Wow. talk about a bunch of people with no clue about nature.

oh great wise one, i am from NYC our racoons carry knives & we aint supposed to fight back....
instead of just crictizing , why don't you contribute from your vast reservoir of wisdom?

22 short or subsonic 22lr. supressed in the head never had anything go to far after that how big are your possums and coons that that won't stop them.

Fireworks?

If one of the neighbors was throwing fireworks at them to scare them, I don't think anyone will notice a subsonic 22lr from a rifle.

However, I'll back the idea of a crossbow with a generous broadhead. Just nail the target to the deck and wait for the twitching to stop.

Another option would be a pan of anit-freeze.
