I am guessing but, I think the California DOJ will always have on file that you owned firearms in the PRK. And why not, as once your in the system, its easy for them to store your data forever.. Sounds daunting huh...

I left CA over a year ago. Most of my guns were purchased there. I don't really care if they keep that info forever. If they want to come and get me, they can go for it. Anyway, if you ever go back you don't have to register handguns that were bought there as does someone who bought their guns elsewhere.

A guy at the range was telling me about his ordeal in getting his AR-15 registered. Apparently he never recieved word that the process was approved. Finally, after inquiring with DOJ, he got the paperwork. In it is says that once an Assault Weapon is registered in California, it may not change hands or leave the State.....
So you have to leave it here. The AG will probably dispose of it for you though for a small fee.
It just never ceases to amaze me.

ARs can't leave the state once registered???!?!? Can anyone validate or disprove this claim. If it is valid, and one does take ARs out of state, what is the penalty?

I wish someone could validate or dismiss this claim. The guy at the range seemed knowledgable and not some commando type. I gather that the State would include such a provision in case they show up at some guy's door and demand the weapon, and the guy says he sent it to his brother's place across the border. I'm sure they would believe him too.

First, congratulations for thinking of moving out of Kalif. You are well on the road to becoming a citizen of the United States again.
Regarding the discussion if the gun can leave - or not leave - the DOJ has a good website with that info. Given they allow you to take the registered assault weapon (Homeland Defense Firearm) back into Kalif., it's probably a safe assumption it can leave the state.

Thanks guys for clearing that up. Its just easy to be suspicious of those trying to disarm you I guess. With the law as clear as it is, I tend toward the more aggressive interpretations.

I really don't see what difference it makes if they don't "unregister" California guns. If you move to a state that allows private sales, there's nothing to stop you from selling them. At that point, you are being governed by the laws of the state to which you move, as long as it's a true change of residence.

If i move out of California, the first thing I'm going to do is get some 30-rounders for my Mini-14 and finally pick up a CMP target AR-15.
May I add that you should NEVER and I mean NEVER, rely on this board or the old TFL for legal advice. I have gotten so many wrong answers to " legal" questions on TFL and by extention THR that it makes what little hair I have stand straight up.
If going to CA, their laws are posted clearly on the firearms section of the DOJ website. All you have to do is know how to read or have an attorney that knows how.
If you call CA DOJ, they are quite friendly and try to be helpful so call and ask. Just remember, the DOJ people aren't always 100% up on the law.
I suggest you print the sections that apply and go over them with a fine tooth comb. You may be surprised.
