A friend posted this on LJ. Interesting, to say the least, but certainly a good way to get the message across.

ROTFL! Aren't "smurfs" a Euro nick-name for the blue helmets?

I think I've heard them referred to that way. I was kind of considering what you thought of this. Too hard? Good way to get people's attention?

LOL! There's a certain Smurf flash movie over on albinoblacksheep that comes to mind when someone uses the terms "adult" and "smurf" in the same thought.

    Silly UN.

I am reminded of the "We need a Smurfette" conversation from Donnie Darko.

Well, if they really feel that folks in their country are more moved by cartoons of smurfs dying than film of real humans of any sort dying, I am saddened. We all see nightly pics of human suffering, and I think that it is inevitable that you become somewhat less affected by it. We would all be in a state of perpetual depression if we actually feel as disturbed as the filmed situations warrant. In their quest to shock and disturb us adequately, news organization have increased the gore and suffering step by step. I expect to see film soon of more closeups of bodies so we can be adequately shocked.
I don't think most parents subject their children to the news at a tender age, and of course they would be terrified by smurfs being slaughtered.
If they are truly aiming at adults to become more touched by smurf carnage than human carnage, I think they have missed the boat.
Probably in reality, they are aiming at children to get their message to those that the message will truly affect. :(

Ya know, if they played Hotel Rwanda, they might not get the effect they want.

I can't tell ya how many times I've wanted to see just such a scene when the smurfs danced across my television screen.

Why do you think I stopped watching TV news? :banghead: (Piece of advice - never read the ACLU news page when looking for something to feel good about. Slashdot's Your Rights Online section isn't much better. (the incredibly entertaining revenge fantasies/ways stupid stuff will bite stupid people in the ass posts do mitigate this some...) )

    Seconded!
