Pacerdude, recoil in a black powder arm is similar to smokeless, but to me anyway, seems less sharp. It's dependent on bullet weight, charge weight, gun weight, stock shape and butt plate/pad size and configuration. Many traditional black powder rifles have a brass or steel crescent butt which isn't very comfortable with heavy loads. The drop at the heel is also greater on the traditional rifles, helping to line up the eye with iron sights, but increasing felt recoil. The newer inline rifles have stock configurations more like modern guns, with most having recoil pads and less drop. This is better, recoil wise, because most of these can use heavier charges than the older cap locks. The easiest way to reduce recoil is to just use a lighter powder charge.
