He wants light recoil so .35 whelen is out.

Well snap, I knew not reading #2 would eventually catch up with me. Of course the thing wouldn't run full tilt cause of the cast bullets and all. Seduced loads may be comparable to full tilt .308 recoil.

I like the 30/30 but .35 Remington would be a good one for me. I used to cast and shoot gas checked .357's but I would think for both Black powder and smokeless a .35 R would be good. As mentioned, at Black powder and lead speed you need as much mass as possible to increase energy.
Is there a 8-08 cartridge? Just wondering.
